I would rather that they take the production money they spend on idiotic talking heads and repurposed DVD material and spend it on transferring a few more shorts in HD.

Special features documentaries that involve the original film maker are OK. But aside from some of the stuff by Disney, most special features on animated blurays consist of the same cartoon geeks spouting the same empty platitudes and meaningless trivia. I really don't need it.

When a cartoon short is released in standard definition as a bluray "bonus", you can bet it drops to the bottom of the list of cartoons to get transfered to HD. That's no "bonus" in my book.

I agree for the most part. I'd much rather just see more Puppetoons in HD than a bunch of extras that repeat each other.

Also, I gotta say, this seems very expensive. I mean, $50? Really? Yikes. I can't do it. Shame, because I just rented this movie from Netflix a few weeks ago, and I love the Puppetoons, but there's been too many titles coming out already this fall that I've pre-ordered. Why don't they knock off all the stupid pre-order limited edition nonsense and just get these things released and in stores? Blu-ray is sucking more and more because of how it is being treated by the studios. Everything is exclusive, limited, not sold in stores. I'm sick of it. So I can't just wait until I have money say after Christmas, and then buy it with some gift card money. No, I have to go broke now and pre-order it or miss out forever. Ridiculous. Also a shame because how can people discover these things if they aren't even in stores?

Yep, 1987 - They're not exactly Ray Harryhausen, so it was a bit of a "rediscovery" at the time since the 50's/60's.

Can't wait until the people who think that $29.99 for Twilight Time BDs is too much find this thread.

Looks interesting, but I've never seen it, and that's way too much for a blind buy.

What stores are left though? A handful of Best Buys and B & Ns? Both of those are cutting down on their media sections, if not deleting them entirely, and in any case are not likely to carry semi-obscure catalog titles like this regardless.

You're right. Folks around here are going to have to get used to more releases like this.

I agree, Best Buy has all but given up on carrying blu-ray discs. There's target, but they're really like Best Buy - random titles. The 2 B&N stores near me don't carry any DVD or Blu-ray. Borders is closed now. There are still stores like FYE and Movie Stop - I have both in my area, and their selection is quite good - both have many many titles you'll never find in Best Buy.

I think at least this should be available through major internet channels like Amazon. The only way to get this is to pre-order it from the link, and spend $50. That's unfortunate.

I'm curious to know if this has been fully restored. The DVD was in pretty rough shape - those Puppetoons weren't taken care of very well over the years sadly. I'd love to know just how far they went with the remastering. Being that it consists of such old film clips, I think there's a balance between being cleaned up and still looking authentic to the time, not DNR'd to death. I'm wondering just how good this can look.

The Puppetoons are glorious though for anybody who is into stop-motion animation.

Again though, selling on the internet only is one thing - Amazon, DeepDiscount, BestBuy.com, etc. - but these limited edition, 3,000 copy, pre-order only, gone-before-release-date, order from only 1 website releases suck. There's no reason why in 2013 there has to be this 3,000 only thing going on, as if they can't make more if they need to for customers. It's just manipulation, trying to force people to buy it now, now, now! If it's a bad month and you can't afford it, too bad for the customer. That isn't right and it isn't necessary. I'd rather see the studios adopt a "Warner archives" strategy where they custom make them as they are ordered, rather than a one-shot limited run thing. At least with Warner they won't sell out - they make them as you order.

My B&N has a huge media section, with quite a few obscure titles. The local Best Buy consolidated the movie section, but it's not that much smaller.

For those who have never seen it and don't want to risk a blind buy, do you have Netflix? They have the DVD so you could always rent it and see if it's worth the purchase on blu-ray after seeing the DVD.
