While I don't personally support a dual-format stance for myself, I can see your point Intamin. It is better, IMHO, for someone like you to have taken the player off the street and rent movies than for someone else who would buy it and continue to buy HD-DVD discs (particularly since the players seem to be in limited supply). This is where HD-DVD claims their strategy will propel them to victory. "We'll give the players away. If people commit their $$ to a player, they will continue to support it by buying discs."

Sony has done the same thing really. They included the Blu-Ray player in a gaming console they already knew would sell millions of units and it has paid off. The gamers they said wouldn't buy movies have carried the format.

As far as I'm concerned, I won't go dual because it only prolongs the war. But in a free market society, people have the right to buy what they want.

Congratulations you just found out what we have been saying for over a year, HD-DUD is garbage and so are the players.

Wow, im glad im not the only one that notice HDDVD picture quality is really not up to par. I was at a buddies house and ofcourse he's a red boy, turn his system on put on MI3 and i got to tell you i was not impressed at all, i mean it looked nice, but it was not WOW that's nice. Now i see that with HDDVD might as well just get DVD and upconvert them, is just the same.

I don't own A2/A3, but unimpressed by HD DVD. I use laptop drive to watch my BDs and HD DVD. I only got 1 HD DVD.
It does look better than DVD, but the sound quality, and extras (in 480p) are unimpressive.

Spidey is a lot better. The best BDs I owned is Bridge to terabithia

Also, I'm aware that it is a 1080i player vs a 1080p player, however, the tv I'm using is only in 1080i for the sake of argument and comparison.
You have a CRT HDTV?

Those were 50,000 guaranteed sales. Better a Blu-ray owner goes purple for some HD DVD exclusives than a new HD DVD only owner buying HD DVD exclusives + neutral studio movies. It's basic logic. And furthermore, better someone with a Blu-ray player so they can actually compare and see which format is better.

Actually, it puts $100 in Toshiba pocket they never would have seen without the fire sale. Otherwise they would have eaten all those dud players and had to pay to ship them back and recycle them.

Because all indicators say that they weren't selling them right? That's why every place in Indy is sold out of them. Look, Toshiba's business model is clearly, let's give away players, because there isn't any money to be made on them, the money is in the software. It's like a pool company that installs pools. They could give pools away as long as they had a contract that you had to buy chemicals from them, because that's where the money is at. Same holds true for DuD, only this time they don't get any software sales.

Yup, it's the same as clinical laboratory instruments. The manufacturer will practically give a $200,000 machine to a hospital, so long as they buy a long term service and reagent contract.
