I would gladly part with some cash for a good quality high definition transfer of The Last Man on Earth or Carnival of Souls.

I believe I read somewhere that a restored Carnival of Souls is playing at some movie theater or another soon. Maybe that's a good sign for Criterion to upgrade their already-exemplary DVD edition. I hope they keep the same cover art if they do upgrade their edition to Blu-ray.

It's my understanding that they figured out the copyright status of 'Carnival of Souls' years ago. It might be that FCE doesn't know this and is releasing it illegally.

Personally I hope that Criterion still has the rights to release this on Blu-ray. I know a restoration was done last year and the film has been hitting the art circuit.

I would love to see this in 1080. I watched my Criterion DVD last year and it just didn't cut it for me.

I believe Criterion only has exclusive rights to the director's cut (which is protected by copyright). The theatrical cut is in public domain, so anyone can release it.

Meanwhile, I bet that Shout Factory does The Last Man on Earth sooner or later (if the Vincent Price box sells well).

I've got a double feature DVD of The Last Man on Earth and Panic in Year Zero that suffices quite well, but I'd love to see an upgrade of both films.

I also have that DVD (it was $5 at Wal-Mart many moons ago).

My understanding is that US theatrical prints fell into public domain for lack of a copyright card while other versions of the film are in fact protected by a valid copyright.

If I can find this for a few bucks somewhere, I'll get it to leave on during a Halloween party. Other than that, the fact that this exists is rather sad.

What grounds would there be for blocking it? This falls well within the BD specs. ("Blu-ray" does not mean "high definition".)

I'm more curious why anyone would bother creating a thread for this release, unless it was just so everyone could mock/bash it.

I have that set as part of a 4 movie set with Land/People That Time Forgot...all 4 films on two DVDs...cant beat that unless they go 1080p HD...and even then an SD upconvert looks almost as good

I have The Land/People That Time Forgot on another disk as a double feature as well. I saw the 4 feature film set, but I prefer the two separate double features.

I'm not going to lie: if I saw this for $5 I'd get it.

When I first saw this, I thought, this is great, I gotta get this. Then I noticed the 480i. It seems ridiculous to release a BLU-RAY with 480i definition, you totally defeat the purpose of blu-rays ! ! !

It's a bargain bin release meant for people just looking for cheap entertainment. It's not really something for people to get their panties in a bunch over. I guarantee that you will see this thing in the $5 bargain bin in a matter of weeks which makes it a half-decent buy for someone just looking for something to watch.

It's a little disappointing that it's 480i as opposed to 480p but I like the idea of cramming a bunch of movies on a single convenient disc. Those public domain box sets have always been a staple of my drunken trips to Walmart.
