yeah, but I don't think anyone (JGL included) expects it to be a box office blockbuster. It'll do about what everyone expected it to.

Would Don Jon perform better if it were Channing Tatum instead of JGL?

Without question, as much as I hate to say it.

Magic Mike and ScaJo? Boxoffice win.

Don Jon should have been platformed the first weekend (as porn addiction won't sell in middle America and the stereotypes will hurt it in cities with heavy Italian populations) before slowly expanding.
Up here in Canada I have seen a bunch of TV spots for Don Jon and not a single one mentions the porn plotline, the spots play it like your average romantic comedy.

Cloudy is the only one to choose here. It is opening in a prime spot for an animated film (6 weeks since the last, although that was to Planes benefit as it is still playing in all the theatres here due to the one kids film requirement that all my local theatres seem to have). Plus it is getting a ton of screens.

1. Cloudy 2 - $35 million
2. Rush - $15 million
3. Prisoners - $12 million
4. Insidous Chapter 2 - $9 million
5. Don Jon - $8 million

Christmas is going to be a mess because 3 out of 4 of those released look to be aimed towards the older male audience.
Also that same week is the nationwide expansion of AMERICAN HUSTLE.

Christmas Day isn't for kiddie CGI-hybrid comedies anymore, now it's for old people, as studios try to figure out why "Little Fockers" beat all the competition.
So, now they assume only old-fogeys go out on Christmas week, to see any movie with Barbara Streisand, Robert DeNiro and/or Ben Stiller in it....Stiller is the new Alvin.
but it's not like there aren't kiddie movies out there. They just open them BEFORE Christmas to cash in on kids on Christmas break from school. WALKING WITH DINOSAURS (and SAVING MR BANKS, which is sort of a family flick) open the previous weekend, and FROZEN will no doubt still be doing good family business having been out for less than a month.

A film like Cloudy 2 is critic proof. Kids will still flock to it.

cloudy will easily be number 1 and could be the only opening film to be a hit as the other 3 which all will have a hard time at the box office this week

Yeah, but it will be as much fun to adults who enjoyed the original?

Adults enjoyed it??

(I saw the shrieking, gaping, bug-eyed preview and thought "Well, I see someone still hasn't learned about 'Ritalin' yet...")

I hated the first Cloudy (I found it an awful, near in-name-only adaptation of a cute children's book) but I can understand why people liked it. I'm just not interested in Lonely Island-styled humor.

I thought the first Cloudy was great, and definitely something adults could enjoy.

I can understand fans of the book being taken aback with it, since it really is basically an 'in-name-only' adaptation, only lifting the very basic premise from the source material.

But I thought it was a refreshingly "cartoony" movie. It had great visual design, and I loved the exaggerated expressions and movements and general over-the-topness.

In addition to all that, it had great humor that is kid-friendly but doesn't insult anyone's intelligence (well, besides the 'chocolate icecream' gag, which frankly was beneath the film) and I thought that, while the characters were highly exaggerated, they were very well developed. The story was mostly just wacky and fun, but it had just the right amount of emotion, with touching moments that felt completely sincere and that you could take seriously.

I'm really hoping Cloudy 2 can live up to the greatness of the first film. So far, the trailer looks great (I really love the visual design), though I admit I'm a bit wary since Chris Miller and Phil Lord are not at the helm. Still, really looking forward to it! It was a strong film in a very strong year for animation (2009).

Anyway, it should definitely be a hit. Hopefully it can exceed the first film's box office returns.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, as did many other adults I know. There were a lot of jokes and moments that adults enjoyed that totally went over kids' heads.
