Didn't know when I posted in the Criterion thread that Thief is getting the 4K transfer treatment. My anticipation for this long awaited title is officially in hyperdrive.

At last, I saw it on the original UK theatrical release when it was lumbered with the name Violent Streets. The cover's pretty good but the original one sheet is one of my favourite film posters. I was doing a lot of night work at the time and I wore out several tapes of the soundtrack on my Walkman. T Dream fans noticed a spot of recycling going on, some of the music is from the Force Majeure album: here's my favourite track

Nice. I like how the roles in Thief were reversed in Crime Story for Farina & Santucci.

I too have never seen this however have heard lots of good stuff about it. Would those in the know about it say it would be worth a blind buy?

I've had the UK DVD with the theatrical cut for ages, but never got around to buying the US disc with the altered version.

I kept reading reviews saying the altered bits looked not so great, presumably as the changes were made on the cheap.

IMDB has a good description of the specific changes and their problems.

Mann has done that before. The "extended" version of Manhunter included footage sourced from an old VHS intercut with 35mm film throughout one dialogue scene, and the first redo of Mohicans had some music pulled with nothing to replace it.

Hopefully this version of Thief will have some of the earlier flaws ironed out.

I think I'm gonna have a heat attack. been waiting on thief for years. Now if I can only get a criterion Mulholland dr. I can die a happy man. thief is a masterpiece. for sure i'm gonna trade in 2 blu rays at movie stop to get this for free. yessssssssssss !!!!

Let's hope they eliminate the shitty sped-up altercations made to the original slow-motion finale.
