OK. I'm a little slow. If blu-ray owners are given full BD treatment with top sound, picture and no HD DVD limitations, Why not have both formats. Who cares? I think everyone just wants their movies. Imagine this situation for a moment. We are the customers. The Paying Customers. We actually want to throw our dollars to these companies and we get snubbed by them. WTF? This makes no sense. Why don't they want our dollars? Isn't that what business does? Cator to its customers and try to sell as much product as possible? They sell, We buy. Everyone is happy. I don't want to hear it's more complicated than that. I know that, but why not have all studios on board selling both formats? There may be a so called winner 10 years down the road, but in the mean time, both HD DVD and Blu-ray fans get screwed and we have to wait to get our movies or buy into both formats. I almost can't beleive I'm saying all this, but my patience is dwindling. Even with Warner right now. Where is my Batman and "V"? Warner supports both formats, so where are they? Just fair Questions that I think most of us have asked ourselves from time to time.

*Sigh* Certain studios have non-negotiable needs, like region coding and BD+, which HD DVD is incapable of delivering. So they're not gonna be interested. And there's the more practical argument: why pay for two encodes when one will do the job? Besides, if all studios did support both formats, what's to step them pulling a Warner and give us bit-rate starved HD DVD ports?

No, the better solution is for Warner and/or one or two *BIG* retailers (e.g., Best But, Frys, Futureshop) to announce Blu-exclusivity. Sure, it may hurt short term profits, but the war would be over and the real $$$ will start rolling in.

Excellent points and thanks for the info. So how about this Question: why don't the long time HD DVD owners switch over to blu as it is apparent they are getting screwed on so many excellent titles right now. Honestly, if I had and HD DVD player, so what! I'd be buying a blu-ray player right now just seeing which way the wind is blowing and to get all of the instant benefits from BD. I wonder if that is quietly happening right now with some of the fan boys.

Default Oprah

Too bad every woman I have met could care less if the movie is on VHS or Bluray. You turn up the volume past 2 and they complain its too loud . My wife would be happy with a 19" tv and rabbit ears, like every other woman I have met. For some reason, most women aren't into home theater.

Probably true...my wife didn't bat an eye when we got our new Directv HD service...she couldn't care less.

All the BD camp needs to do is have Oprah add it to her "must buy" list (or whatever it is she sells) or give a PS3 to each member of her studio audience (with a mention that it is for playing Blu-Rays) and the war would be over. All you need is Oprah's endorsment and chicks will be wet with anticipation over their PS3 purchase. She could even have an actor in the studio who's just about to have a movie release on Blu-Ray just yucking it up over Blu-ray.

I'm telling you, Oprah is the key...

Thoughts?
That's so funny I was seriously thinking the same thing 2d when i was watching Ellen n she was giving away stuff. So many ppl in the world watch Oprah wut a way to build awareness

Better if some insider/BDA can get to her before Toshiba/Microsoft do!

Any insiders have the right connections. Her big give-away shows are the highest rated shows she puts out, and Millions of people see what they get and then want it for the Christmas season. When iPod's were just new, she gave them out, and iPod sales that Christmas went through the roof. I'm sure her show helped those numbers.

Who has connections to get on Oprah's Give-away show list?

Oh and yes - Oprah is a very good idea. I don't think I have ever watched a show of hers. I catch bits and pieces every so often, but yeah - whenever she mentions something - people buy it.

Question

Isn't Oprah's big surprise gift extravaganza episode due soon...? You know, the one where she brings out a boatload of new gadgets SHE likes and hands them out to all the audience...I wonder if she'll actually pick one of the HDM machines this year? Whichever one she picks will surely see a boost in sales for sure!

But what about the fact that they need an HDTV first? What percentage of the population in America have HDTV? Let alone Oprah's audience

For the same reason men are not into knitting. It's not important to us. Women have no interest where they do not have valued input. It is one thing to involve the wife and have her say, "You decide, I don't care." It is another to make her feel left out of the process. "I decided on this model, Honey. Do you want silver or black?"

Start trying to involve her in these purchases and she might feel it is a shared value, and not a man's "just for me" desire.

And that's one to grow on.... <shooting star>

All someone has to do is SHOW Oprah a Blu-Ray. Or have someone tell her to say it and mean it. That is all you have to do to start a shit storm of buying.

Someone here has to know someone that knows someone that knows someone that knows Oprah! You know you do.

MAKE THE CALL!

First off: 'Oprah' and 'wet' should never be in the same sentence.

Second off: Last I checked, a majority of Oprah viewers are not 'chicks'.

Third off: Those that are 'chicks' probably have their minds warped by Oprah enough that they find the term 'chicks' to be degrading and offensive

Fourth off: Most of these viewers are "Stay at home" women/mothers. "Stay at home" pretty much means "Their husband is bringin' home the bacon". If hubby isn't willing to have his paycheck spent on Blu-ray, then you're stuck.

I say to just get endorsement from the male equivalent of Oprah.

Ideas on who that is? Nascar? I don't think Nascar is the godsend to men.

Maybe Brett Favre or some other NFL god. (Sorry, my other colors are Green and Gold, not just Blu). You see how Farve's endorsement of breast cancer awareness really took off, so he may have some pull.

Somehow I think it's more than just a phone call. You think she doesn't get paid to pimp those items?

Also, don't you think the HD-DUD people have been reading this thread too? They're probably moving on it faster than the BD folks. They tend to be on top of things like this. Why do you think they're still in this war? It definitely isn't because of the technology.

Fact is, HD-DUDers are probably laughing at this thread. I started it as a joke, but, fact is, we don't need no stinking Oprah. Blu-Ray, on its own, should have merit enough to beat HD-DUD. I'm starting to get a little more disappointed with the BD's "all talk and no game" strategy. Sure, the technology is great, the titles are nice, but it's almost like they aren't even trying.

Every time HD-DUD comes up with some gimmick, the BD camp rarely does anything to counter. It was obvious that they had to do something about Transformers, thus the BOGO, but all of this news that HD-DVD gets out there is always unanswered by the Blu camp. With the exception of Disney, who is single-handedly keeping Blu alive.

I'm all for Blu winning and beating the crap out of HD-DUD, but I'm starting to lose faith in the powers that be.

I couldn't care less. Anybody who allows their minds to be warped by Oprah have already lost my respect.

What guy wouldn't go buy a Blu-Ray player if the wifey said, "Hey, I didn't know the Playstation 3 did high-def video, but Oprah loves it. I want one.", would say, "Nah, I think I'd rather spend my $399 on Pretty Punch."

Peyton Manning already sponsers Sony. But I can't think of one thing that Peyton doesn't sponser.
