The special edition of the Master and Commander DVD was superb. The Blu is not really an upgrade here.

Yes it is. The Blu-ray audio blows the DVD audio out of the water (pun intended), and the picture quality offers a substantial improvement.

The DVD was quite good by DVD standards, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Blu-ray.

That animated gif isn't a great upgrade over the DVD version, it's lacking pop.

Well, the video clip is an upgrade over a gif w/o sound.

Your smoking crack lol. The ultimate hunter edition is not great but it is certainly better than any of the DVD releases.

Maybe on the sound, but I've never read any good reviews on it.

Malcolm X and Goodfellas certainly were never intended to "pop" visually, but the Blu-rays are definitely a big step up from the DVDs in the picture quality department. They're not perfect, but they're not as bad as you're making them out to be either. And while there could be some improvement with Master and Commander, it looks much better than DVD, and it still holds up quite well for being an early Blu-ray release. Plus the audio is fantastic.

Maybe you should just jack up the contrast on your TV to get some extra "pop" if it's that important to you. You'll often lose the intended look of the film, but maybe it will help your personal enjoyment.

...and I see you have the Ultimate Hunter Edition of Predator in your collection. I was going to recommend that one for you and tell you to avoid the first, far more faithful to the theatrical presentation Blu-ray release. One you don't have in your collection that I would highly recommend is the first release of Patton. You'll love that one.
See, I mention the word "pop" and everyone wants to be a snob about it. First of all, I'm over 300 movies into the blu ray game at this point. Not my first rodeo. I'm merely bringing to light 3 movies I've recently purchased that, to me, fail to bring anything to to table visually that the DVD didn't already (but yes, the audio in Master and Commander is tremendous). These are 3 BD movies sold at a premium over normal BDs that I would think would make more of a concerted effort to justify said premium.

So spare me the "unwashed heathen" treatment. Also, spare me the whole "faithful" presentation and director's vision crap especially regarding Predator. Director John McTiernan has said himself there was no "vision" in the graininess of of Predator, just a budgetary constraint which prevented him from using better film stock....which in all likelihood would have yielded results closer to the UHE disc than the 2008 disc in the first place....

Jurassic Park, Belly, Footloose, Weird Science, The Sandlot, Rocky, Goodfellas, Batman Begins, and American Psycho all have horrible PQ but by far Paid in Full- is the worse!

Bad PQ on BDs is why I still own 298 DVDs.. and counting!

If you come onto an enthusiast website and make comments like this:

To me, the bottom line is this: does the the blu ray "pop" or not? Does it provide a different, better visceral experience than watching the DVD counterpart? In the matter of the 3 films I mentioned, the answer is a resounding, NO.

We can talk about halos and grain and bitrates and color timing until we're all blu in the face but for me, "pop" comes first..everything else is negotiable.
[Show spoiler]There's no reason why any given BD, even in black and white, doesn't provide this over a standard DVD. "Pop", in terms of critic-speak I suppose, would best be described as the color vibrancy and dimensionality of the film.
...you're going to get an earful (or an eyeful if you prefer). It shows a disregard for the integrity of the art of film. That opinion is certainly your prerogative, but very few people around here are going to agree with you. That's particularly the case when you decry the lack of visual "pop" in a couple films (Goodfellas, Malcolm X) that were never intended to visually "pop." If you want more people to agree with your opinion, it's a good idea to use examples that are actually relevant to your argument.

You're being a little snobbish about this pop thing too though, aren't you?

You say you're confused and flabbergasted by BDs that don't meet your personal pop test.

You describe BDs that don't meet your personal pop test as so bad you half expected replacement discs.

You say BDs that don't meet your personal pop test don't bring anything to the table visually over previous DVD releases.

You seem to be putting an awful lot of stock in this pop test of yours.

Perhaps a bit more than is warranted.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout. Someone who can stay on point! Over the years, I've double-dipped approximately 100 of my 500 DVDs to Blus. The three movies I mentioned here were the absolute last of my DVD collection destined to get the double-dip treatment (although I'm still waffling on Blade and Blade II)

What do you mean by blus that "pop?" Do you mean blus that have cranked up contrast and crushed blacks? Yeah, unless it's an artisitc choice that adds to the film I could do without all of that.
