I can finally retire my DVD (since the current Blu is horrendous). Thank you so much, Scream Factory! One of my favorite horror films.

"I hope I give you the shits, you f***ing wimp!"

I'm sure Shout Factory have done their homework and discovered they can vastly improve on the current release, otherwise what would be the point of reissuing this title? It's still easily available to purchase online.

In fact the Blu sometimes looks even worse then the DVD, take a look here.

Holy crap... yeah, you weren't kidding, the UK DVD actually looks better than the US First Look Blu-ray. All the more reason to look forward to Scream Factory's attempt. The only release I have now anyway is the US DVD

I saw some people complaining about the decision to release this as a CE as it is not worthy. I disagree - Dog Soldiers if an awesome movie and one of the best werewolf movies I've ever seen! There are much worse movies out there under the Scream Factory brand.

It's so silly! Why would anyone care that a movie they don't like is being released in a collectors edition that fans of the movie will enjoy? YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY IT!

Yeah, I think majority of horror fans would appreciate this movie released as a CE.

I was really surprised to see the blase response to this title in the main Scream Factory thread. I get the impression people were mostly either turned off because of the timeframe in which it was made, turned off because of it's US roots with the Sci-Fi (now SyFy) network or simply unfamiliar with the film.

This film is a micro-budget champ. It really is one of the better post-2000 horror films and one of the better werewolf films of all time, IMO. It's a little bit Predator, a little bit Rio Bravo, but with Scots and werewolves. The werewolf effects are mostly excellent and the film doesn't rely on artificial CGI. Right now, there are few films on Scream Factory's 2014 slate thus far that I'm looking more forward to.

A lot of Scream Factory fans are butthurt because they want more slasher sequels.

This is one I'm really looking forward to. Neil Marshall achieved great things on a small budget with a quality cast. The ending is funnier for the British as its a play on the infamous tabloid headline Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster. I hope the blu squeezes in Marshall's short film Combat as found on the UK DVD and I think there were some interviews and storybords that only made it onto the Australian DVD

Well, that's a load of bull. Dog Soldiers is pretty well-respected horror, and my favorite werewolf flick (Yes, I've seen An American Werewolf in London, and no, I haven't seen The Howling yet). In short, it's a great blend of horror, action and humor. It's also quick paced, tense and highly atmospheric. CE is certainly well deserved

You hit the nail on the head here. I think a lot of Scream fans are probably happy; I think that so far they've built most of their catalog on old-school horror - it's the jump into more modern films that has some people thrown. I get it, but they're going to run out of movies sooner or later, especially at their release rate. They've got to start breaching out into other eras and possibly even different types of films. I guess we'll see.

(I actually kind of hope they pull back on their amount of releases and maybe put more time into each one. I'm not sure how long they can keep things up at this rate.) But I digress.

Dog Soldiers?

Does scream/shout do their own scans ? just curious, I don't think Ive seen a message one way or another. The cap-o-holic comparison is quite scary how bad that original blu-ray is, compaired to the UK DVD. In any case I'm looking forward to Dog Soldiers, and Ginger Snaps.

Thus far, I don't think they have, at least not for the Scream Factory line. A new HD telecine might be more likely. That should still afford a huge upgrade over the existing disc.

Shout Factory- only works with what the licensors give them, they don't do new scans.
As grateful as I am for Halloween II, III, and They Live- they are just average Universal transfers that people would slam if they weren't put out by Shout Factory.
They apply tweaks to the transfers they get, but on something like The Howling or Day of The Dead- there's nothing they can do to actually meaningfully improve anything...
Not true. I supervised almost every Corman transfer and we did Deadly Blessing and Death Valley.... And I could list a lot more.
We don't do scans because they are expensive and we don't own the films.
I stand corrected and beg your forgiveness.
I am sorry.

What I meant to say is- with something already out in HD, I don't expect much improvement.
I say this because you don't do new scans.
Either way I'll buy everything you guys do- always have and will.
You can still get a great looking master from telecine. Not every studio transfer is a 2K or 4K scan.

There's a group over on Facebook (here) that's been pushing for this for some time.

(I admit that this isn't strictly a blu-ray question, as a DVD would please them, too, if the quality were there. The problem is that seasons 1 and 2 were released by CBS as the studio owned the rights, but stopped there.)

Thanks in advance for anything you can do.
Nope...and we wouldn't scan a negative for show we don't own. It's too costly.
Hey, now this gets interesting.

If both a negative and a positive were offered to you, wouldn't the scanning cost be the same? If not, what am I missing?

Second, if you don't own a show, well, okay, so you license the rights. So, you are implying the owners charge a different rate to loan a positive for a scan versus loaning a negative for a scan? Could you give us a feel for the difference in licensing costs?

Thanks for the insight. I never considered this previously.

-Jim
Any scanning costs more than doing a telecine film transfer.

Great news and thanks for the heads-up Akijama. Was just about to pick this up last week, but put the money elsewhere. Usually it's the other way around, I buy something and the next week a new whiz-bang edition is announced.

And by making it a CE they can also make it a higher-priced release, which could well make the whole project more affordable. (And no complaints from me! I love this flick.)

Doesn't Shout often region lock its releases? (Pardon me if I'm wrong.) If so, it would be great if they had teamed with Arrow in the UK, and made it a joint venture. That would boost the budget for this, and also take care of the Region B fans. Or maybe they can license out the transfer to Arrow afterwards.
