+1 more or less. But I have to rate a film as good-very good for it to even be in my collection (unless its part of a box ie Robocop 3! )

It doesnt matter how nice the steel/digibook is if I think the film is below a 7.5/10 - Im not buying it.

If I really like the new packaging and I have some extra money I will.

nope. If there are special features, then I will think about it but never for the packaging. With dvds, I used to look online and find custom covers to print off so I would have something different but then I figured out I was spending all this time and effort on something that I never looked at anyways as all I see on the shelf is the movie spines. If you are interested in collecting the steel covers, then go for it but something like that doesn't have any interest for me.

Yes. I bought the steelbooks for Batman Begins and the Dark Knight. Probably because they were $10 each and look good next to the Dark Knight Rises steelbook which I already owned.

I bought the Walmart exclusive blu-ray of Skyfall, despite the fact that it lacked all the bonus features of the 'regular' release and no DVD and digital copy.

Why?

It had the different black background cover art and spine which matched the other 22 Bond films.

I've done it on a few rare occasions, but only if I get the "new" version for super cheap and can resell the old version for at least a few bucks. I wouldn't want to actully spend $$$ just to get different packaging.

For instance, just the other day I picked up the Full Metal Jacket digibook for like $5 (from TCMshop), even though I already have the original blu-ray release. I should be able to sell the original for a few bucks, so why the hell not? I think the digibook had a few extra features (don't remember exactly), although I know it was the exact same transfer.

Now if a film was a brand new transfer, I have no problem at all with double dipping if it's a noticeable improvement. Already did it with Patton, Terminator, Casablanca, Total Recall, and I'm sure a bunch of others.

If I really, REALLY love a movie, I try to get it in a steelbook... except in rare cases like for The Shawshank Redemption, where I prefer the standard artwork (US & AUS) to either of the available steelbooks. But as a general rule I try to get steelies for most of my favourite films.

Oh, and sometimes I double-dip on ordinary releases too, if I spy a different version with a better cover; but only if the replacement is cheap.
I started doing that a bit and "double dipped" on a few steelbooks. But then I realized that I was actually worrying about "protecting" the steelbook cases (not letting them get scratched, keeping them separate from all my other blu-rays, paranoid about dropping/denting them). I even bought a couple of brand new ones, that when I unsealed them I noticed they had dents that I didn't notice when they were still sealed. So in the future I'm actually going to STAY AWAY from steelbooks - they are just too much of a distraction/hassle.

Yes. A few times. Most obviously The Dark Knight. I bought the Canadian steelbook just to own the steelbook. Then when Wal-Mart had their steelbooks I bought that one cause I liked the cover of Batman on the front of the building better. Also I just last friday bought Kill Bill vol. 1 steelbook cause that's the one I've been intending to buy anyway.

The last time I did this was with Pacific Rim. I've decided to no longer do it.

Nope. Don't care enough about packaging to do this. Slipcovers end up in a box, steelbooks and digibooks are OK but I won't spend extra on them. I double dipped only for the remastered Terminator and the extended version of Avatar. I've ended up with extra copies of Lethal Weapon, Se7en, Psycho and North by Northwest because of buying boxed sets after buying the stand-alone releases. Need to sell the spares.

I might think about it for my favorites if I thought the packaging on the original was just bad, never done it though

I normally would not upgrade for packaging alone but I recently did with The Complete Adventures Flash Gordon dvd release. The price was low enough that it didn`t bother me to do it.

If its reasonably priced and a movie I really enjoy, then yes. I like looking at my collection even when I'm not watching it.

As a matter of fact I just did. I had purchased 3 Bond titles off Amazon Canada for a decent price and the French/American Titles on the spine were starting to bug me. So just took advantage of the cheap pricing on the US Bond titles and replaced all 3. Didn't cost me a thing as I sold the 3 Canandian ones on Ebay for the same price and broke even. Normally those things don't bother me, but I've got them on the top shelf where I see thm all the time. Guess I could have just moved them ...

No. That's ridiculous.

Can't wait for digital downloads so we can stop all the nonsense over slipcovers, packaging, etc.

I have. I just end up giving the original as a gift. It isn't always packaging either, sometimes it is having a film before a collection of films comes out.

Nope! So far the only movie I've bought a second time is Avatar. I just had the first release that came out not too long after it was in theaters. Then I bought the Extended Collector's Edition on Amazon because it was $19.99.

Yup. For special editions such as steelbooks or digibooks.
