His other 3 hour movie is Casino which is by far the best film Scorsese has ever done (at least for me). And this is another bright flashy epic about greed as well s o it looks right up that films alley. WIth De Niro being replaced by Dicaprio and Jonah hill in the Pesci role |

Remember , last year Django Unchained (another Hard R nearly 3 hour film with Dicaprio as well) overperformed. It also became my favorite film of last year just like I am hoping this one will. |

We'll have to see what numbers look like for today, but it seems like Desolation of Smaug is the most likely winner for the weekend, with Frozen having a good chance at it as well.
Whatever the case, it seems that Frozen will outgross Desolation of Smaug for domestic totals.... I thought Frozen might post an increase over Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph due to the goodwill from those movies, plus the optimal release date, small competition, and winter themes, but it is surpassing the wildest of expectations. |

No movie made more than $10M yesterday, pretty disappointing.

I also thought Frozen would've made quite a bit more than $6M.

Bleh it's been out for 5 weeks now, imagine most of the people who were going to see it have already gone. Still a moderate success but it's nowhere near as profitable as the LG movie that came out the same day.

If you look at past Christmas days, family films seem to have drops or muted increases from the previous day. Frozen went from $4.8M to $6.3, which is a decent increase.
Many family films seem jump up nearly 100% the day after Christmas. While it might be reaching to expect $12M+ from Frozen today, $10M is a good possibility. "LG movie that came out the same day" = Catching Fire? I guess you're including Frozen's limited release at the El Capitan? Anyway, I don't know about "nowhere near as profitable." At it's current pace, it will likely be less than $100M behind CF domestic when all is said and done, and not all too far behind worldwide either. Plus, merchandising is a big factor in animated movies, especially Disney movies. Honestly, this will probably be one of their most profitable movies since the early 90s Renaissance. Sure, if you're just counting box office grosses, it will be behind CF, but I definitely wouldn't say "nowhere near." Last edited by celticmoon; 12-26-2013 at 04:13 PM. |

But Frozen has had better staying power. I don't know why you're downplaying Frozen's success.

I'm still surprised people are continuing to go see it, looks as if it's nothing more than a generic Disney film, oh well. Hunger Games opened well but there have been so many films that opened since it came out and there's also the fact that it's a girl power movie so it's not that surprising that it's tapering off quite a bit.

And Catching Fire is doing very well. Films that are as highly anticipated as the HG films will always open huge and drop off fairly quickly. It's holding very well for the type of film it is, and will just about match the first film if not slightly surpass it on the domestic front. CF would have been doing very well even if it dropped $50M from the first film. And that's to say nothing of it's great overseas increase. |

So you havent seen it? Its cool that you can judge a movie and bash people for seeing it by its trailers. |

Not trying to bash anyone but from what I've heard about it it's a rather generic film with forgettable characters. Doubt most kids care though since it's a Disney movie with a snowman in it and it is wintertime so they probably get a decent amount of enjoyment out of it.
