The Conjuring was "okay" so I voted for Evil Dead. Still don't understand why an unrated edition never came out for this film.

I kind of meant the actually genre of horror

I found nothing about The Act of Killing surprising, nor horrifying. Certainly sad, and especially for the old guy it mainly follows around at the end, but that's about it. I'm no documentary enthusiast, but certainly not amongst the best I've seen.

Sad? The guy is hailed a hero for his killing of innocent people. I certainly found it horrific, how can certain parts of the world still live like that and hail people heroes for horrific hate crimes, and it takes him until the end of the film for the guy's actions to Dawn on him, it's terrifying as far as I'm concerned that people live like that. Certainly scarier than any jump scare saddled crap America tends to chuck together.

While I enjoyed Evil Dead, can you really call it the best Horror film of 2013 when it wasn't even remotely scary? I would think a more traditional "scary" film like The Conjuring would've been the unanimous choice for most, although I haven't seen You're Next so I can't speak for how scary it is.

P.S. It's an embarrassment to the horror genre to place the Carrie remake in it! That movie was a joke.

The Conjuring is one of the best horror films ever made. The same can't be said of Evil Dead, but certainly that is the more entertaining of the two. "Best" is such a broad and nonrestrictive term... both are winners in my book.

From this list, Mama and You're Next both deserve a nod while Carrie and The Purge are better placed in worst of, or more appropriately, you had such promising material, how could you possibly screw that up?.

And whether or not you feel a film fits those terms is subjective.

I feel The Act of Killing fits that definition.

I feel The Act of Killing fits that definition.
then either you didnt understand the movie or you dont understand the definition. the movie was not made to shock or scare you, it is meant to shed light on horrific things that happen in other parts of the world most people would rather not know about. to lump it in with a form of entertainment is just wrong.

There's more than one way to understand a movie, and I understand the definition just fine.

A. Citation needed.
B. Even if the film wasn't made to scare me is irrelevant. If I find a movie that wasn't made as a comedy, funny, then to me that film will be a comedy regardless.

I actually thought The Purge was one of the poorest films I saw in 2013.

Yes sad. I found it sad how the man came to terms with what he had done. Like I said, I found none of it surprising. Of course there are still places like this in the world. Were you born yesterday? Did you previously think everyone in the world has grown up with your ideologies? Do you also believe people in North Korea grow up seeing the world the same way we do?
Much of Indonesia is still a third world country. Governments all around the world poison their people with ideologies. These people, most of which haven't killed anyone themselves, grow up on the stories of what they have been told is right, and don't know any better. So yeah, I find all of that sad, as I feel pity for these people.

Horrific though? That indicates being terrified, and scared. Why would I feel scared watching something like this? Flinching, and wanting to turn my eyes away? Sorry, but that sounds odd and naive.

It's not a movie, it's a documentary. There is no room for interpretation with a documentary like this, the film makers intention is the point, period. I don't know how you can put a documentary about mass murders of innocent people in the same category as the other movies on the list. Do you really not see the monumental difference??

And you would be wrong. Genres have definitions. The whole point to genre labeling is being able to describe a movie objectively.

People are forgetting this.

Personally I thought The Conjuring was tons of fun. It probably beats out Lords or is on par with it for me.

Evil Dead was an absolute letdown. I hated it.
