Preordered! I'll be getting all of them: Robocop(already have), Rocky(in the upcoming collection), Fargo, Rain Man & Good/Bad/Ugly(hopefully in a nice steelbook from the UK).

Has it been anounced that the Rocky and Rain Man in this set being released in 2 weeks has the remastered editions?

It would be kind of crappy if they released this set with the old masters and then made people buy the remasters over again.

I'm thinking YES since the version of Family Favorites releasing the same day includes the not released The Black Stallion.

I heard a remaster of Leaving Las Vegas was coming with a new behind the scenes documentary from back when they were making it. Rumored Criterion was trying to pick it up. I would love to see that poor film remastered, the current version looks like a DVD... a really bad DVD.

My late grandfather, George Stokes, worked on Rain Man as the Construction Coordinator. I've never owned this film in any home video format, so I will be on the lookout for this.

My uncle just happens to be George Stokes Jr (his son)... Funny how IMDB gets their names and credits mixed up.

That would be sort of exciting but sort of annoying, since it sounds like Criterion may have BOTH Leaving Las Vegas and Midnight Cowboy, and the set doesn't contain Fargo (hell, I'd throw in GBU as well).

Me too! And for the life of me, I can’t understand why there isn’t more excitement about these releases.

Earlier tonight I had a bunch of people over to watch the new ROBOCOP bluray, which has the MGM 90th Anniversary trailer at the beginning of the disc. I was expecting to see clips from the announced titles… and sure enough, the clips from the remastered ROCKY look fantastic, and RAIN MAN looks like a huge step up.

But what I wasn’t expecting to see were all the upcoming titles I haven’t heard one peep about. The remastered MOONSTRUCK looks outright amazing, the new WHEN HARRY MET SALLY is a major upgrade… and the remastered ANNIE HALL looks like a night-and-day improvement over the current release. Someone in my home theater literally shouted “wow!” when the new shots from ANNIE HALL came up.

After ROBOCOP was over we went back and re-watched the MGM trailer twice more. I’d say SILENCE OF THE LAMBS also looks like it got a 4K remaster. Some of the other titles were harder to tell, but based on the brief images I suspect THELMA AND LOUISE has been remastered, as has the original CARRIE.

Looks like a lot of double-dipping is in my future.

I wonder if they will fix up the cover art? The current cover looks very low-quality, low resolution, all dithered, lack detail, and the wrong forced perspective to boot...? It will save me the pain of having to work on a custom cover if they do the work correctly...

Yeah, I wish they use the original film poster.

You mean this?

How did you get the idea that all these films shown here will get a remastered Bluray?
i thought it's just a collection of their best films that have been released, or will be released.
I mean, Dances with wolves and others will get a new remastered Bluray?

I was planning on getting the older Blu-ray release but with the announcement I think I will wait now and see the remaster on this. Does anyone think that we will get a new transfer for this?

I don't think I understand what you're asking? Will Rain Man receive a new transfer? Of course it will.

I think she is not sure about the terms "remaster" and "new transfer" which the studios have done a great job of mucking up (along with "restoration").

Probably is, but it does give a good sense of what the MGM brass feel are their top films.

Re-read my post. I didn't say "all these films shown." I noted specific titles that absolutely have received a remaster -- almost certainly from new 4K scans.

I didn't think anything from that trailer looked exceptionally better really. I don't think we are going to see any night and day comparisons here to be honest.

The potential negative with these new MGM remasters is, there seems to be an attempt on their part to boxset them in order to get you to buy them as this seems to be the case with Rocky and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. What's next? Are they going to attempt to boxset Rainman somehow too with a Dustin Hoffman or Tom Cruz package? Of course and fortunately, there are overseas options for individual options. Pretty sh*tty on their behalf if this indeed is their marketing tactic.

Thank you for answering this. I know that is seemed a rather silly question but I like to know as I am aware of the complaints the last Blu-ray received I just wanted to be sure.

Heh, sorry. I know that was a rather ridiculous question. Anyways, I extremely excited about this new remaster that we will be receiving. I have been holding out buying this on Blu-ray just in case a new transfer became available and now it has finally! This is definitely going in my collection!

I hope the new transfer of this has better color timing of the opening scene at the car lot. For some reason everything has a terrible red/pink shift. Almost as if the hue dial got shifted over. If this is a true remaster of the film, I would think the colors of the new version should be pretty spot on- especially if it's a 4k transfer.
