Nice to see this thread has garnered some interest :-).

I have written a review about this release and agree with most comments regarding the PQ. The PQ is a mixed bag. Many shots are not focused properly and there is also DNR. Often it is hard to say if a certain shot is so soft because of DNR or if it is just out of focus. All in all it is often a mix of both.

Colours and contrast as well as blacks are robust and the blu-ray release is okay for such an old catalogue title. I would rate the PQ 3/ 5. So if you love the series it is worth getting.

The picture quality is MUCH better than pre-HD broadcast quality. I am delighted.

I'm interested in purchasing this miniseries. I loved the book, I've read it so many times. I remember watching the miniseries when it came out on TV and I couldn't get enough of it.

Now I want to buy this bluray, but I'm in Australia.
Will it work/play in this region?

Looks like I will have to purchase via here or amazon, as there doesn't seem to be any retailers here that sell it here.

Tx

Australia and Germany have the same region coding for BluRays (Region B), also Australia has SD format PAL, so, any SD stuff on the disc (bonus features), should play.

This are region free disks from Paramount as identical sold in North America, Germany and Scandinavia the only regions they have released it in. The extras are 480i rather than PAL so will play in both North America and Europe.

You will have no issue playing in Australia. Cheapest option is the German version from Amazon.de This will have German writing on sleeve but the worldwide disks will automatically go to the English menus for you etc when you play them.

The image quality of the BD is not that good. It's much better than the DVD, but the transfer ist obviously older and shows some strange artifacts (e. g. vertical lines all over ther picture):

I have the set (Nordic release) and those vertical lines are barely visible most of the time. They shouldn't be a deal-breaker.

So long as it's watchable. I loved the mini-series, hated what they did to get the movie onto TV (cut it to bits). If I hadn'tve seen the mini-series or read the book umpteen times, then I would not have enjoyed the show. The movie was really off!

I'm certainly not going to purchase the DVD based on your comments above.

You say the nordic version is better?

Where do I get that from, direct from Norway/somewhere?

Thanks

He does not say the Nordic set is better (as they all come from the same Paramount material) but that the vertical lines do not spoil the enjoyment of the series for him.

Nevertheless they are there and the image quality maybe watchable but it is definetely not very good.

It is the same disks in all the countries this has been released in, so just go for whichever is cheapest. Paramount aren't producing different masters for each country they are selling it in.

Different people have different tolerances to PQ, hence the divergence of views. To me Shogun looks fine in HD given the age and bearing in mind this has NOT receiving a mega expensive restoration from the original negatives. It looks okay in HD and definitely better than the DVD. Just don't expect a stellar HD picture matching a new Hollywood blockbuster on BD or one of the classics like Laurence of Arabia which had loads of money spent on it.

But those scenes might not be considered to require subs, since in-universe we're seeing things through Blackthorne's perspective and it's a plot point that he doesn't understand Japanese either, hence the need for the interpreter and the wait for the translations.

I've always been curious as to what the actors were actually saying, though. (In the book, there are some funny moments when the multilingual characters talk about the monolingual characters in front of their faces before deciding to go with the option least likely to lead to problems.)

Just wrong, as there are many scenes that are Japanese dialogue that Blackthorn is not in at all, and all of the talking between the Japanese to each other in the book is written in English when they are speaking. It is only in Japanese in the book when speaking to or from Blackthorn and a good majority of that at least is then given to us as a translation even if no is translating it to Blackthorn.
There is far to much dialog that is left out (over 70% of the show it seems) without a translation of the dialog between the main Japanese people that is a great portion of the story.
It would be nice if the parts that are spoken someone would translate, As most of the Dialog that Blackthorn speaks is directly word for word from the book but a lot of scenes are cut to fit in 9 hours so obviously we can not do a direct book to show translation and then in the book there are always thoughts about what happened in the past days where in the show it just goes directly through most of them in correct chronicalization instead of the format the way it was written in the book..
So, If someone speaks Japanese fluently, I am sure a lot of people including myself would be most appreciative if you would add to the 3 file Bluray version .srt that most of us have either here if there is a place or to subscene.com

Still its a shame that another good 25% or more of the book is just thoughts that are not expressed in the show at all.

No. The whole concept of the show is that the audience is as clueless about what is spoken as the main character.

I know, but I've rewatched it so many times that I no longer feel like an 'outsider' so I'd love to know what the Japanese are saying. Also, from what I've read the book does state, in English, what the Japanese are saying.
