I've never really notice smoking, except for the black stressed-out cop in Terminator accidentally lighting a cigarette while he already had one, and the mentally-distressed Ripley holding a cigarette (but not smoking it) in Aliens.
I also notice cigars (Hellboy, Wolverine, Groucho Marx). Cigars make you look like a badass. Cigarettes not so much. |

Any/All of Aki Kaurismaki's movies... His movies are like an advertisement for smoking, there is usually a character smoking in every scene of his movies.

I don't care if they smoke in movies as long as it fits and isn't over the top. People still smoke so why can't they in movies? Only thing I don't like is the cliche stuff: here is the rebel in leather smoking, here comes the villian and he is smoking, etc. That is just lazy character development.

I've always felt smoking was a stupid thing to do. I mean, when a building is on fire and you're trapped inside, firefighters tell you to put a wet towel over your face and get close to the floor so you can avoid breathing the smoke because it will kill you. Yet, millions of people stick a cigarette in their mouth everyday. Stupid!
I was able to tolerate watching people smoke in movies because, as I was growing up, it was the "norm". But after I watched my mom suffer a long and excruciatingly painful death from lung cancer (she smoked for 45 years), now I can't stand to see ANYONE smoking. I vividly remember the look of terror in my mother's eyes as she slowly and painfully suffocated to death. She was hooked up to the morphine pump for 2 months and, other than sleeping a lot due to the morphine, she had all of her faculties. She knew she was dying, she knew it was coming soon, and she knew it was because of cigarettes. She was scared to death. So, these days, when I see someone light up cigarette in a movie or anywhere else, I immediately think to myself… idiot! And, boy, NOTHING is more of a turn off for me than to see an attractive woman light up a cigarette. Gross! Mark |

I don't smoke, I consider it a filthy habit, and yet...it sure looks cool on film.

Starting smoking (especially with how sick it makes you feel at the start) is a stupid thing to do, people continue to smoke because the nicotine has already wrecked their nervous system so much that they feel like they are going to die if they don't get their nicotine does (cigarette) on time. It's called quitting "cold turkey" because heavy smokers get sweats, goosebumps, and cold skin (like a cold, plucked turkey) when they quit suddenly. That ain't "stupidity", that's straight up addictive drug withdrawal (in this case, the drug being nicotine). |
