I guess you are right, I should at least watch it before I form an opinion. I'll rent it when its available to rent in a few months time.

It cuts deeper too since Peter Weller has a very sympathetic energy to him what with his warm smile and unpretentious good looks. That scene is even more devasting in hi def ):

My biggest problem with the remake is that it looks like a by the numbers action adventure. It's like they don't even want to do anything or turn things on it's head.

If you remake a film, make it your own, don't copy the original. Take Cronenberg's excellent remake of The Fly or Carpenter's sublime version of The Thing. Or how about Herzog's wonderfully revamped Bad Lieutenant? Those are the best examples of how yo remake a film. Reinterpret it and make it your damn own. It's as simple as that. The remake looks to just copy the original without the absurd violence. Wheres the risk? Wheres the creativity?
Yeah, there's something about Weller that makes the film great. The trailer totally makes the movie look like what you are saying, a watered down version without the creativity. But the video review posted above gives me a bit of hope, especially the remark that the director has kept most of the subtext/themes intact. I still think it won't capture the surprise of the original. I did like Total Recall rebooted, though, so I will probably change my mind.

Saw this today and really enjoyed it. Its extremely well done, really well directed. In no way does this feel like a money grabbing exercise. The action is fairly sparse and low key, its not a big cgi fest. The performances are great, kinnaman is a very effective Murphy, Oldman is brilliant and Keaton and Jackie Earle Haley lend great support. This movie is dark and definitely not for kids. Its very different to the original but it maintains a lot of the themes, embellishing on some of to great effect. This will be a day one purchase for me.

Just back from seeing it.

I didn't hate it, but it's hard to hate something that you felt absolutely nothing towards. It's a toss up between this and Jack Ryan, for which was the most boring and pointless franchise resurrection of early 2014.

Kermode's review is so damning with faint praise, it should be linked on Wikipedia, whenever someone looks up 'Damning With Faint Praise'.

Seriously what is up with people, blood and gore alone do not make a good movie. The trailer is not the finished movie, it only promotes it. See the finished film in order to gauge an accurate opinion.

Ratings can be misleading as well, I'm not sure I'd consider The Dark Knight or Transformers 3 suitable for 12 year olds. TDK has fairly strong violence and there's some surprisingly strong sexual humour and general perviness in DOTM...

Kermode was asked about it on his radio show and said it was a fairly strong 12, I believe it said it was more a "blimey Charlie how did this get a 12" than something you'd 10/11 year old child to

It follows the, in my opinion slightly disturbing, philosophy of recent PG-13/12A rated films that quite extreme violence is fun for all the family as long as you don't show the consequences (ie. blood). The recent Wolverine was another one; our hero can stab as many people as he likes as long as we don't see their wounds.

The action relies rather heavily on shaky cam, something that doesn't normally bother me at all (in the Bournes for example) but I struggled to see what was going on at times in this.

There's also a couple of quite gnarly surgery scenes that had mothers in the showing I saw ushering their kids out hurriedly. Although one scene, that was presumably supposed to be shocking, had the audience in fits of laughter - something I haven't experienced to that degree since George Lucas thought it would be a good idea to use the word "younglings!"

The extended cut of The Wolverine has some blood and gore and that got a 12.

And the BBFC work on the public's opinion not the philosophy of showing violence, and apparently the public don't want the effects of violence being shown at a 12...

I'm not saying they should show the effects of violence in a 12, the opposite in fact, I think it's odd that the violent act itself is considered okay. It seems like the wrong way round to me.

Anyway, I think it's more the MPAA, the American media has rather strange priorities when it comes to censorship, and the BBFC just follows suit.

Anyhow, didn't mean to get off topic...

Neither does CGI, yet most movies are full of it.

I'm shocked to say it wasn't bad. Nothing close to the original, but if you take away the nostalgia it might be close to 2. Certainly better than 3, but that's not saying much.

They explored some different ideas which I liked. After the tease they really needed to use more of the music.

I'll be interested to see how my opinions shapes in time, but now it's kinda good, but not great by any means.
