Just watched it. Great plot, and certainly a great cast, however terribly executed. The score was awful. Oh well, I tried really hard to like this but no.

My suggestion is, rent it first.

Default The Monuments Men TV commercial focuses more on "own digitally"

Are you bothered that the commercial is more focused on owning the movie digitally than on Blu-ray?

In 2013, digital sales were 1.19 billion compared to physical media's 7.78 billion. Alarmists and people who want to see physical media fail predict that the numbers will soon be switching sides.

The movie tanked, it was available digitally three weeks before physical release. Sony has to get the money back on it otherwise its a huge loss with two big stars attached.

So the ads out now are going to talk about digital ownership because you can own it now. A large segment of customers don't realize a lot of movies are released digitally sooner than the DVD & Blu-ray.

Ugh... it was bound to happen. I just never expected it to happen so soon when the technology is nowhere near ready for it.

$78 mil domestic
$76 mil foreign

Not bad for a February release aimed at adults.

Had the same thought. I think it didn't live up to some critical expectations but it doubled Clooney's next biggest film.

With a $70m budget, both studios (It was released by Sony in the US and Fox internationally) probably lost a bit of money on marketing, but probably not a lot.

Yes, I know, but the movie did not "tank" as steve_dave claimed.

Nearly all big-budget studio movies are essentially made for a theatrical loss these days (with an eye on long-term ancillary revenues).

Funny thing is that the main audience for this like most of Clooney's directoral efforts is the 45 and up crowd, probably not the best film to advertise as download only.

Alright, I take back the tanked comment but it still didn't perform as well as hoped especially with big names attached.

It also looks like Sony is going with an "Own on Digital" for all their home video releases going foward because Pompeii has a similar home video marketing campaign. So Sony is pushing digital ownership with a small subtitle saying Coming Soon to Blu-ray and DVD.

I haven't seen a new TV spot yet for The Monument's Men to see if it now says "Own on Blu-ray and DVD" with the subtitle "Also available on Digital."

I saw one on Saturday. They mentioned "own on digital" first. If I recall correctly, while they were playing footage from the movie there was a "own on digital" message at the bottom.

At the end of the tv spot, they showed a picture of the Blu-ray with "own on Blu-ray on May 20th" and whatnot. It was a few days ago so everything I said is paraphrased from the actual commercial, but I do remember them focusing more on the digital release than the Blu-ray release.

Dunno if you've heard, but Sony is hemorrhaging money big time. It's going to try anything and everything to staunch the bleeding.

TV spot was updated to now say "On Blu-ray and Digital," no mention of DVD whatsoever.

The story of which this film is based on is extremely interesting, but the film itself leaves a lot to be desired. The script is fairly well written, but the screenplay is not. Everything jumps around so much that it it's difficult to emotionally connect to the characters. Also, most of the performances leave quite a lot to be desired and Clooney needs to brush up on his WWII history a bit. Still, it's mildly entertaining and worth a rental, but I have no absolutely no desire to watch it again.

Yeah, I saw this in theaters and was decent. Like a good but unexceptional TV show... worth the time you spent sitting through it, but nothing I'd want to own or anything.

I saw this in theaters also and thought it was really boring. People in front of us was falling asleep and snoring lol. It needed some more action or something to hold your interest better.

Watched this last night. Better than I expected after all the not-so-great reviews but still, nothing outstanding here. It seems like the movie never wanted to be too funny or too heavy and kinda just stayed in the middle as much as possible. Middle = boring. A good story but not a great movie. It left me feeling like it could have been much more. I do want to read the book now though.
