Gotta say I'm really shocked to read how so many of you open each & every title you buy right away! I mean I ALWAYS think about the resale value of stuff in case I ever were to sell it. I couldn't begin to count how much I've lost in resale value of OOP stuff over the years due to carelessly opening everything right away (the worst part being is 90% of the time the movie went unwatched!).

These days I will only open stuff right away that I plan on watching shortly after or to sell of some of it's contents (ex. Digital Copies).

I'd say my collection is about 40-55% unopened/unwatched.

Resale value has never been a consideration of mine when I'm purchasing Blu-rays. I buy movies that I enjoy watching or that I want to watch, and I always assume that the money that I spent on the Blu-ray is gone forever (in the same way that the money I spend to see a movie at the theater is gone forever once I've purchased the theater ticket).

In fact, resale value is never a consideration when I buy anything. I bought my Toyota Tacoma with the intent of owning it for over a decade and driving it until it absolutely cannot function anymore. If I buy a house, I'm going to buy something simply because I want to live there and enjoy my life while living there.

I did sell off a bunch of my DVDs when I made the jump to Blu-ray, but the money that I made from those was icing on the cake. As far as I'm concerned, they paid for themselves in entertainment value as I watched them.

Generally the only ones I haven't watched are the last disks of some series I have in progress and the disks I had previously watched as BRD rentals. Even then, I think that is not much more than 5% of the totals.

Don't get me wrong, resale value is never my initial intent when buying anything either, I just make a conscience effort to keep stuff sealed in the event I ever were to sell it, then I would maximize my profits. With movies this hasn't affected me that greatly, however video games has been the real killer for me!

When I was much younger I worked at a game store, so I would get a ton of great stuff, and over the years either due to time constraints or simply loss of interest I have sold off a great deal of my game collection (which at one point was rather impressive!).

But getting back to what you said about "once you buy a movie, you consider that money gone forever", having that mindset would NEVER work for me since I don't earn enough to pay for my hobbies, so I always have to look at selling things for future purchases.

I have found that maintaining something in 'like new' condition only knocks off 10-15% versus the value of a disc that is brand new. The problem I encountered with my DVD collection is the feeling that the format was useless and that many of the discs just don't have much resale value. My tastes have evolved and I never have bought crap titles, but even films that were Oscar nominated don't seem to fetch anything in the resale market.

Blu-ray on the other hand is different. I guess if you have any intention of unloading a part of your collection the time to do it would be now - while it is still the best format available.

I've watched the feature presentation on 33 of my blu-ray titles and have 32 that I haven't watched. (yes that only equals 65, but I don't count the Charlie Brown cartoons as titles) Of the 32 I haven't watched, I think I counted 12 or 13 that were blind buys.

I've done this recently with a few Disney titles, so I understand your POV. I had an unopened Beauty and the Beast that I had purchased new upon release. I happened to find one at the pawn shop ($5) after the title went OOP. Still had the sealed one, so sold that for $65 at Christmas.

Like you, I didn't purchase it with the thought of selling it. Just turned out to be a good decision.

Probably have 30-40 unopened titles (of my 500). Another 200 are unwatched in this incarnation - meaning, I've seen the movie, perhaps even on blu-ray (as a rental) and purchased it later (and haven't gotten around to watching it again).

I'll say 10%-20% unopened. I open them when I go to watch them, and often buy a bunch at a time when prices drop.
