I saw this movie in "into to cinema" back in college. My professor noted that his favorite "can't show sex" sex scenes is in this (when you see the deer skipping).

This is a great film, but I wish it had a better than 2K transfer...

Anyway, just pre-ordered.

Never heard of the show, but I'm guessing they are all morons on it? Rock Hudson isn't even in North by North West, that would be Cary Grant.

Yes, I agree. I love the vintage painted feel to the new Blu-ray cover art. Plus, the color scheme is downright BEAUTIFUL! It just SCREAMS autumn in New England.

Well done, Criterion!

It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I do find the DVD cover rather evocative of its love story and themes. While the film was shot in technicolor, I recall its lighting as more expressionistic than Criterion's new bland Blu-ray art.

I also agree. The photorealist painting style for the images of Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman just SCREAMS 1950s magazine illustration. The font style for the title, and the autumn color scheme, are so evocative of the visual feel of the film overall. While the DVD cover was beautiful, it did not really match the overall visual style of the film.

I too think the illustration is a lot more fitting and stylish than the film still. People really seem to hate commissioned illustrations as covers these days and which is reflected by the decline of art for film posters. Instead of the stylish graphic designs and illustrations we got till the 80s, it's now all photos and badly photo-shopped at that. Apparently audiences can't make the mental leap anymore that a painting or drawing doesn't represent an animated film or is simply considered old fashioned.

GUILTY.

When I saw the cover I instantly thought Criterion had badly botched another release with DNR!

Just watched this film for the first time. The transfer from Criterion is hands down one of the top 10 I've ever seen for a catalog title. It's unbelievable! Terrific film too! Never thought heavy melodrama could be this good. Film is visually incredible as well.

Do you think Criterion would ever do a Douglas Sirk blu-ray collection? I have All That Heaven Allows already, but would totally double dip if they did a box set w/Magnificent Obsession, Written on the Wind, any other Sirk titles they have access too, and if they could get Imitation of Life. I think this would be a surefire best seller for them.

interesting. that new german bluray release (in two months) of All That Heaven Allows by the Label "ALIVE" Comes from the criterion-material. So... after the lousy cheap previously released bluray - finally we're getting a good Quality...

It's such a beautiful film. As many of you, I would love to see as much Douglas Sirk as possible.

I really should have picked this up during the sale, but I ended up going with more titles that I haven't seen. I'll definitely pick it up during the next Flash Sale.

Same here...
But another Hudson/Sirk drama,"The Tarnished Angels" is being released by KL in March 2019. Not a Criterion release,I'm afraid.

Looks like this is being reissued in a single-disc version on 2/12. I guess they finally sold through their stock of the old edition, with the 2 extras coasters, which appears to be OOP now.

Does this re-release contain all of the previous extras? I don’t mind losing the DVD as long as they kept all the extras and booklet.

I’m asking this because I noticed the previous release came with not one, but 2 DVD Discs

The Blu Ray will be the same. The second DVD was just the Blu Ray extras for DVD owners.
