I just keep it simple and do alphabetical, and for triple features and sets that have multiple movies, the first movie is the alphabet where I place it, like the 300/Troy/Alexander triple feature set goes in the numbered titles.

I have certain things group together, like Star Wars and Star Trek. Television shows are together and movies I now have them place by release year. It's something that work's for as I know exactly where to look on the case to pick the one I want.

I go alphabetical, for everything. DVDs, Blus, video games, and tv shows are all alphabetical and sorted seperatly. If its a series of movies, they all go together, in chronicalogical order, unless they have different titles, like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. TV shows go in order of season.

When your collection is very large, it is hard to effectively handle it. I store all my films on one of these:
IMG_1219.jpg I just filled my primary server up, so I need to put some additional drives in my other server chassis. Each chassis can hold 14 hard drives, so with redundancy to protect against hard drive crashes, I can put 48TB of titles on a single server. This one has over 2,100 movies. IMG_1220.jpg Now I can sort my films by genre, alphabetical by title, actor, director, genre, rating, year or even how long the movie is. Resorting is one click away. Find the movie and press play - done. Then, to save space, I can take all the cases and put them in these and store them in the garage. Now I don't have a wall of discs to try and display. Entry level systems retail at $4k, but a larger server like this, fully stocked with a couple disc vaults and 5 zones of HD Playback will retail at about $55k.
Loading the films is easy - put them in a disc loading carousel and everything else is automatic. It can load about 12 Blurays per day or about 50-60 DVDs, depending on how much content is on them. They are bit for bit copies of the actual discs, so there is zero loss in quality. |

And as I mentioned in an earlier reply to this thread, regardless of the size of ones collection and the means by which the discs are played, regardless of this I'd still recommend everyone take the time to catalog their collection using a program like DVD Profiler, My Movies or something similar which in turn will provide for browsing ones collection in the digital realm by any number of criteria using the given PC based application or mobile app, in the case with My Movies also being able to browse ones collection up on the big screen via a HTPC running My Movies for WMC7. Of course once finding something to watch in the digital realm it's a simple matter at that point to play the given disc, even if that involves physically getting your hands on the DVD or Blu-ray and dropping it in a single disc Blu-ray player rather than having it play on the fly off a hard drive or from a Sony DVD/Blu-ray changer as I do with the "DVD Juke" activity I created for my Pronto remote or My Movies for WMC7 solution. My set up: All the discs that are comic book related for example are together and then from there they are divided by companies, Marvel and DC. From there I have the animated films and live action films separate, at that point they are in alphabetical order.

Been reading about NAS systems and such ... Looks fun and does give you a lot of ways to automatically organize and back up the media... lots going for it. I would certainly enjoy the project ... though the pre-built systems of that sort have never appealed to me.(I guess because of the cost.) -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 07-19-2014 at 06:39 PM. |

The discs are not stored flat. The cases are stored in the bankers file boxes. Most of them are vertical but I pack the last par of the boxes with some laid flat on the top.
Most of my discs are stored in the disc vaults we have to have them in for copyright issues, although I have a lot that I do not need to slot in the vault and those are spindled and sitting in a stack of spindles in my home office. |

![]() Just kidding, it's pretty awesome actually, just not something I would want to do. As more of a collector, I prefer to display my collection. I sort mine the same as I have them in my collection on this site. Steelbooks together in alphabetical order Didigbooks Scream! Factory Criterion Collection Disney/Pixar/Animation TV Seasons Everything else ![]() |

You can check out my collection in my Home Theater gallery, but I have them separated by 3D, then 2D movies, then television at the end of the collection. And obviously the display sets aren't in any discernible order. Just whatever I think looks good at the time.
And Mr.Poindexter, my heart jumped right out of my chest when I saw your set up. I hope one day I'm able to afford that server. That is awesome. Damn student loans... |
