Hope this happens. I like all of their previous collaborations. Hanks is the perfect actor for the types of stories Spielberg tells.

It has been years since I saw Munich, but my stance back then was the same as yours; pretty mediocre. I need to see it again to see how much the politics bother me, and with more research.

What I mentioned above is mostly based on reading other people's interpretations, but it sounded like the events of the movie didn't exactly jive with the real-life events.

The biggest thing is the way it purposefully makes the main characters out to be pretty daft and inept, while simultaneously sympathisizing with the terrorists. War of the Worlds pretty much did the same thing (the alien tripods being analagous to invading Americans, and Tom Cruise becoming a kind of terrorist), so the two movies together was pretty much like Spielberg contorting the stories around to convey his personal (left-wing) views on the war on terror, and it was pretty much all saying that Americans are evil and terrorists are good.

I personally find these messages disagreeable and horridly one-sided...but I'll just leave it at that, as other folks may find them enlightening, agreeable, or else just don't care.

All that being said, I found Lincoln to be pretty objective politically, so hopefully this new movie will be more evenly-balanced as well. I'm just concerned because it sounds pretty close to Munich.

Seriously? War of the Worlds? Man fights alien invaders trying to destroy the world is somehow a terrorist sympathy propaganda? Really?

Well,
[Show spoiler]Tom Cruise did chuck a grenade all alone against one of the tripods. All to save his people from being sucked up, while tripods harvest human blood and violate the land (in scenes that somehow resemble oil drilling). One of the bigger paralells would be the dude's son joining the military to fight the aliens, which David Koepp claimed is inspired by the reports of teenagers fighting on the Gaza Strip
.

I really didn't register these paralells at first, but it was the online reviews that diverted my attention to it, and it all seems to blatantly obvious to me now. Not that it really detracts from my enjoyment of the film, because it is the alien carnage that takes the stage. But the way it shows that carnage is a lot less about eye candy (especially since most of it is shoved to the background), and more about seeing human beings struggling and being forced from their homes like refugees or something. In spite of that, the film generates sympathy for the victims of war, without explaining much about the invaders themselves (which, for WOTW, is expected, but the timing of it and the way it shows things reflects modern times so much that it seems to make the generalization that everybody who wages war is evil, and the other side is just struggling to survive. The reality is way more complicated than that, imo).

Am I looking too much into it? I don't know anymore. But in the case of Munich, I think there's a strong point there that things are totally flipped around when they probably didn't need to be.

My point is, they are not as perfect as most people think. But in Spielberg I trust. He's a great storyteller.

They were amongst many who rewrote that script through the years.

So it's a two-punch like he did a few times before. Shoot the visual effects heavy fun film first, then while that film in post-production he will begin with the drama heavy serious one. Then have them released in the same year. It will be like Jurassic Park and Schindler's List again.

I really can't wait for this one. Big fan of Hanks and Spielberg, especially when the two make movies together. Add in the Coen Bros., and it's hard not to have this as one of my most anticipated films of next year.

This film now has a title, hope mods can rename this thread to Steven Spielberg's St. James Place (Tom Hanks) (2015).
