I got a cousin the same age I showed her fma brotherhood and soul eater, durarara, nisekoi, the first three got dubs right now and nisekoi is currently streaming . I think those are ok for kids I think except for Blair from soul eater she's kinda the only one who gets risqué I guess but it should be alright I think. Depends on you I guess.

Fairy Tail is a good suggestion. Along the same lines, Soul Eater is pretty popular with kids. Shakugan No Shana is another one.

Make sure to look at the general ratings for some of the suggestions, a few are trying to steer you towards very mature properties.

Medabots, Shaman King, Zoids, Zoids Zero, Monster Rancher. And most Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki films

Here is a decent site OP.

http://www.christiananime.net/reviews/caareviews.php

They have their reviews set up

Violence:
Nudity:
Theo Theme:
Neg Theme:

Ignoring the last two, I used them to see how much fanservice some shows have.

Also please no discussion about religion. I'm just showing OP this as it is a decent resource.

I example of a review for SOA.

Good anime, but not for young audiences.
SAO has a plot that is divided into two distinctive sections. The second part of SAO has more nudity/violence than the first part, but is integral to watch in order to reach a real resolution to the story.

Violence / Gore:
Characters continually use weapons to fight one another, but there is not a lot of actual blood in this anime as it takes place in a virtual reality. However, the fight scenes can be extreme. There are multiple death scenes in SAO, and people intent on murder.

Nudity / Sexual Content:
There is a scene in which a topless girl is nearly raped(the nudity is not totally detailed, but the scene is intense). A villain starts multiple conversations that are sexual in nature. There is a scene in which a young girl strips to her bra and panties and "offers" herself to a guy, though she is turned down. There's also a scene with an unclothed girl in a bathtub (again, not totally detailed). Some random scenes close-up on or highlight female body parts.

It is also important to note that one of the main characters of SAO has a female relative who turns out to have romantic feelings for him - though it is unrequited. This relationship is a major part of the second half of the plot and hard to ignore.

Potentially problematic theological themes:
There are a few times when a character uses the Lord's name in vain. Also, a villain repeatedly calls himself a "god" near the end of the anime.

Other potentially problematic themes:
There is mild swearing, but not in every episode.

It's been a while since I've watched it, but Giant Robo I think is relatively mild.

I looked up a show I know has zero nudity, it got a rating of "2.7" so I'm not sure how accurate it that site is.

Freedom is a good sci-fi anime. I don't remember anything objectionable in it.

Surprised nobody mentioned Fullmetal Alchemist or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. There are mature themes in this and some violence, but no perverted stuff. May be too intense for some 9 year olds, but I think some could handle it.

Future Boy Conan is a great classic anime directed by Miyazaki and appropriate for kids. It has never been officially released in an English-friendly version but you should be able to find it online with fan-made subtitles.

Anyway, I'd get Brotherhood over the original, for the sole purpose that it's better. It more closely follows the manga, whereas the original goes off and does its own thing.

Sorry, I was scanning for titles and used to seeing them in italics or bolded or capitalized, so I missed that.

Yeah, I haven't really looked at the whole site. I used it a few times on stuff I own. It's not like there are a ton of reviewers there haha.

I presume they are basing it on some form of suggestive content like sexualized character designs.

Even though there's no gore, we see
[Show spoiler]Taiso
with half his abdomen missing, Daisaku's father sitting in a pool of his own blood, The Amazing Fitzkarald magically slicing people in half, and
[Show spoiler]Ginrei
dead from a gunshot to the head. But if the OP's cousin was okay with the decapitations and dismemberments in "Princess Mononoke", maybe he can handle all that, too?

I think Patlabor can be shown to a 9 year old along with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Patlabor does have 1 TV-14 age rating, but to me its more closer to TV-PG since the violence and language are mild.

no perverted stuff but boy it gets heavy sometimes with the themes, the girl/dog episode could scar him at that age (although it was toned down from the original which was even more disturbing)

[Show spoiler]Sorry, sorry, I had to. It's impossible to avoid adding troll recommendations to a thread like this. However, I'm a pretty neat guy so here are some actual child-teen friendly shows:

Fairy Tail
Naruto
Toradora!
Durarara
Clannad and Clannad: After Story
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Anything by Studio Ghibli
Free! (It's not a troll answer, I think it's quite good)
The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Maybe Sword Art Online?

How would you feel about recommending Akira or the Ghost In The Shell film? I saw them when I was 13-14 years old so I'm sure they aren't that racy I guess. The same goes for Black Lagoon or even Attack On Titan.

I'm not sure if it would be to the liking of a nine year old boy, but definitely for kids... Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, anyone? Lots of stand-alone episodes of... you guessed it... classic fairy tales. A lot of them get DARK! Here's a great one (with an awesomely awful dub):

(Google it if you don't believe it's an anime)
