I've been sick this week so I was fortunate enough to watch the original movie right before watching this. They do a great job connecting it to the first movie (ignoring all sequels). The only thing off from the continuity is that The Omen (1976) has Damien's birthday as June 6, 1970 whereas this show has the story start on his 30th birthday. Unless this show takes place in the year 2000, they are taking liberties with the dates. Judging by the technology shown, I doubt it is supposed to be 2000. I can understand why they played with the timeline though; the TV Damien needs to be 30 to
[Show spoiler] Overall, I liked it and look forward to episode 2. I also like how they play homage to the original score. Right now his character seems like a good guy just trying to live his life. It will be interesting to see how/if he tries to fight the evil inside him and if/when he embraces who he was born to be. This show has a lot of potential as long as the writers and this actor can pull it off. BTW: I'm still pissed that The Returned was cancelled. I really enjoyed it and wanted to see what would happen next. I guess I can check out the French version that came before it. |

It was a pretty good start. I just hope they don't try to do some kind of redemption story. Damien's destiny is fixed. He is destined to become the despotic antichrist, the son of perdition just like Norman Bates is destined to become the iconic serial killer from Psycho. This series should just be a chronicle of how that transformation takes place i.e. how the humanity he initially has is swallowed up by the evil inside him.

Thought this was absolutely dreadful. I kind-of hate shows like this and Lucifer that are trying to recast Satan (!) as a guy we should be cheering for but there might have been some mileage in Damien very slowly figuring out who and what he is. Instead, they compressed it all into one episode and threw in a couple of lame deaths to boot. Damien looks like a GQ model and so quick to believe all the gobbledygook being thrown his way that he comes off like an imbecile.
I'll give Ep 2 a watch but I can't really see how they're going to redeem this one for me. Pity because BATES MOTEL has been surprisingly good. |
