Kung fu cannibal zombies. Got your attention? Grab a ticket to Edward D. Murphy's RAW FORCE (1982), coming to Blu-Ray from Vinegar Syndrome! The Burbank Karate Club planned on a little tropical pleasure-cruising in the Philippines. What they didn't plan on is a confrontation with Chip, a Nazi war criminal slave trafficking local girls to a nearby port. Why, you ask? So they can be devoured by flesh-eating monks, who consume human meat to charge their powers and resurrect Warrior Island's most legendary martial artists. Of course. The B-Bank K Club ain't taking this one sitting down. One of the more lunatic flicks you're likely to encounter, RAW FORCE is everything that's right with movies. It's fast-paced and action-packed, filled with undead samurais, naked girls, and a bartender who headbutts a block of ice in half when he can't find the pick. Vinegar Syndrome's release comes restored from the 35mm camera negative, and contains interviews with director Murphy, cinematographer Frank Johnson, and co-editor Jim Wynorski. A definite essential. "Their carefree vacation cruise turns into Hell on the high seas!"

Last night, I watched my Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray of Raw Force.
In short, Raw Force is a bountiful plethora of delights for every person who is schooled in drive-in cinema, horror cinema, martial arts movies, and exploitation fare. I'm still trying to decide whether this is the greatest movie ever made or one of the worst movies ever made. I'm leaning toward greatness. A team of martial arts experts find themselves stranded on Warrior Island after their ship is hijacked, and they stumble across a sex slavery ring where women are kidnapped and flown to the island for to be sold to a group of cannibalistic monks, who believe that eating female flesh will empower them to raise the dead samurai ninja warriors in the island cemetery. The protagonists soon find themselves battling the zombie ninjas in order to escape while trying to avoid the deadly piranha in the waters surrounding the island. Martial arts battles, sword fights, decapitations, cannibalism, zombie attacks, and gratuitous nude scenes all ensue. If you made it through that summary with a straight face, or even without a straight face, then you'll love this insane drive-in flick just as much as I did. This Blu-ray sports a great video presentation, and everything looks fantastic, which is surprising for such a lowbrow drive-in movie. The sound quality is pretty decent as well. There are not many extras on this disc, but I quite enjoyed the handful of interviews. Highly recommended! |

Including a topless Camille Keaton (of I Spit on Your Grave infamy) chugging a beer while some nebbish fumbles with her jeans! She was rather nonplussed when I asked her to sign my Blu-ray, though she did give me a bit of sound advice: "Never let a friend convince you to be in a movie." I protested that her scene was the highlight of the film as far as I was concerned, an assertion which she seemed rather dubious about.

I watched Demonoid for the first time today. It's streaming (free w/ ads) on Tubi TV. Good quality, so I assume it's the BD transfer. Somehow, I never got around to renting it during the VHS era, despite it having possibly the most metal cover art ever! It totally doesn't live up to it. It's alright, but it plays like a '70s TV movie.
As for Raw Force, the synopsis here sounded familiar: |
