Thanks. Good news and bad news!
I have the Megastar releases but would have liked to upgrade if the nice packaging also came with better discs

Just finished watching As Tears Go By and I was surprised how bad it is I hadn't watched it for several years... well...^^
Image quality is on par with the worst looking scenes from Ashes Of Time Redux - i.e. no grain at all, pure softness without fine details. Sound quality is fine, but during one scene I heard crackle. (I also did when I watched the Mega Star BD of Days Of Being Wild a few years ago.)

@Infernal King:
The English translation for ATGB is totally fine, perfectly understandable and grammatically correct!

@blooregard_q_kazoo:
Yes, the guide books are in Korean only. Shall I take some photos for you guys?

Well, they DID release Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love!
But yes, it's strange that both ATGB and DOBW haven't had a Bluray release outside of Asia yet! (But what's even stranger is that there is still no Bluray of 2046...)

Thanks again for posting those photos, dapp91!

I ordered both of these from KSteelBook about 2 weeks ago and they shipped a few days later but I still haven't received them. Not sure how long it usually takes for packages to arrive from South Korea so I'll wait at least another week before getting worried.

I might not open either of them and just sell both. I'll decide after they arrive so if anyone here is interested, let me know.

And even when they do release a Japanese movie, there's about a 75% chance it will be something from Kurosawa.

I bought 2046 on DVD during the latest B&N sale because I've lost confidence that it will receive a Blu-ray release anywhere in the near future.

Criterion is heavily biased towards American and European cinema. Like I said, most of the Asian cinema they've put out on Blu is from Kurosawa.

Didn't Kino release Days of Being Wild on DVD? Why didn't they put it out on Blu like they did with Fallen Angels and Happy Together?

Yes, I have the Kino DVD. DVDBeaver has a good summary of editions pre-dating this release, and the reviewer conclusion was that the source material may be problematic... so maybe that's why Kino passed on blu-ray.

The Kino disc does have better subs, but I got this version for the packaging and hopefully the PQ. One of my favourite scenes of any movie, the end scene with Tony Leung CW, has no dialog and is one of the most beautiful uses of lighting that I have seen.

This movie even not easy to understand in Chinese, so the English subtitle is not so easy to be made great.

The English subtitles on Kino's DVD were pretty good, I thought.

after taking a look at the pictures above im glad i ordered these movies

the english translation on "days of being wild" is similiar to other HK releases. if you dont mind stuff like

KINO: do you bring girls home often?
HK: do you bring girls home oftenly?

might be annoying for a native speaker. but i have to admit i wouldnt either not notice while watching the movie or dont care.

Yeah, thinking about getting these soonish, as "As Tears of Go By" is starting to sell out.

I'm still kicking myself on not buying the SK edition of The Grandmaster. Most sites are now saying it's "temporarily out of stock" but that's usually synonymous with OOP.

I have new, unopened copies of both movies (Korean editions). If anyone wants to buy, I've been trying to sell them on eBay but a SK seller is stealing customers away.

I'm keeping my Korean edition of The Grandmaster, though. Great package, image/sound quality, and my favorite cut of the film!

No. The SK edition is the longer international cut and the only one that's english friendly.

These are 3 different versions .. with some differences at each version. Its not cut in the sense of "Censored"
