Yes, according to Prime Focus World:

Maleficent is a beautiful, visually stunning film in 2D,” said PFW stereographer Oliver Allen-Wielebnowski. “The stereo we created was designed to lift it to the next level of beauty.

The decision was made early in production that the filmmakers’ creative use of depth on Maleficent would be best served by stereo conversion techniques

Studio Stereographer Layne Friedman, who was working with three separate conversion houses on the movie, provided the teams with a stereo brief for every single shot, ensuring consistency across the film and speeding up the stereo creation in the process

That being said however, me and my fiancée were very lucky to get a special advanced screening pass to see the movie in 3d 2 days ago and we both thought the 3d was fantastic and the movie was great too! It's a very clever and surprisingly moving reinvention of the original movie. It had some problems (I love Sharlto Copeley, but he was truly underutilized in the movie as Stefan, but I still found his character interesting, if a kind of one dimensional and over the top. Also some of the 3d conversion elements are a tiny bit hit and miss, particularly during a cardboard cut out look with certain characters in the beginning, but overall I was shocked at how much of it looked like native 3d.) but Angelina Jolie's truly awe-inspiring performance (I can't stress enough how perfect she is as Maleficent) clever story, and absolutely stunning 3d and visuals make this a must see and a very worthy companion to the original movie.

I'm expecting to see Maleficent get a 3D blu release stateside. Disney didn't release Frozen initially stateside because (my opinion) they are milking this cash cow for all it's worth and Disney is going to release the 3D Blu version stateside this fall to to take advantage of the holiday sales. I dont see Disney treating Maleficent in the same way as Frozen. We'll see.

I was suspecting the same thing, this is the most logical explanation.

As for Maleficent, the 2D US release hasn't even been announced, not sure why people are jumping to conclusions already.

Thanks for the review Mseeley; the 3D sounds promising and the previews looks very good for the 3D; and congratulations on your engagement as well.

Good point. I agree Taygan.

Saw this last night and was pleasantly surprised! Although it added to the overall presentation I didnt think the 3d was hugely impressive - there was real potential for this movie to "pop" off the screen, but mostly it was depth that was delivered and it worked well.....

I did like the "darker" side of the sleeping beauty story and Jolie pulled off a very fitting portrayal of Meleficent.....some of the CGI created creatures looked a bit tacky and overly cartoony which just came off looking a bit weird and almost not quite fitting for the rest of the movie....Comic relief was inserted by the three fairies - but that too seemed a little too hmmm slapstick to sit just right.....BUT take those two small niggles out and the rest of the movie is actually quite a "surprise" treat...

Media in New Zealand is going down the ho-hum road as far as reviews for the film (who really takes note of them anyway) but they have noted Jolie's performance....

Previews included:

The Fault with the stars (or something like that - totally irrelevent for a 3D screening, and quite possibly the target audience!)

Then "How To Train Your Dragon 2" - the 3D kicks in and this looks like a good production - plenty of depth and glorious animation!

and Finally "Transformers" I was keen to see how this would look on a big screen...the movie looks awesome - but going by the preview I saw the 3d looks lack-lustre and rather flat....I kinda felt a little let down, I guess this will be a wait and see when the actual movie hits the screens - It's Transformers so it should do well in any case....

Chris
(oh yeah...these are just my opinions eh?)

3D-Previews in Northern California included: The Book of Life (2014), colorful native-CGI-3D animation for Halloween, coming October 17, & Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) coming August 1, and Disney's Big Hero 6 (2014) coming Nov 7, 2014.

hate to say it, but this viewer (me) was completely underwhelmed by the 3D post conversion - glad I didn't spend more than $10.25 - or I would have felt ripped off.

Probably because NEED FOR SPEED has already been announced...no 3D. Same goes for the already released PIRATE FAIRY.

Because of Disney's behavior and track record. And perhaps the naive hope that someone in authority reads or cares what customers think.

Probably not the best resource to go by for 3D releases.

On a positive note (which seems to be rare these days), Disney is giving us Captain America in 3D.

Hope your wrong, but odds are you're right. Beats the shit out of me why 3D isn't supported world wide when blus are released. Those marking iceholes really don't understand the reasoning of my credit cards. Anyway, I hope your wrong. It would be good to release 3D in the states.

No, that's Marvel...owned by Disney but Marvel has autonomy, separate from the Buena Vista Home Entertainment group.

The movie was average and the 3d was meh. It was mostly mild 3d with occasional medium shots.

Yeah...Thanks again Disney for listening to us.....****ers,lol

I plan on importing Maleficent now that we know no 3D blu release is coming (in the states that is). My only concern now is: will Disney start region locking the 3D blu import release?? Ratatouille 3D blu release was region locked to the surprise of some of the members on this site that pre ordered and bought it.

I just wrote this letter to the Disney company

I'd like to address this letter to a representative of the home media distribution for Disney films,

I'm a huge fan of the 3d format and Disney has been absolutely exceptional in the past with 3D Bluray releases of new and classic films with exceptional presentation and value. However starting with the lack of a 3D Bluray release of Frozen earlier this year (I'm still wondering if the rumored 3D Bluray release is coming later this year like I've heard) 3D bluray releases from Disney have been nonexistent and I'm disconcerted and upset that 2 more major Disney Studios distributed titles from this year, Need for Speed and Maleficent, have been announced for release on Bluray in August and November respectively, have no 3D Blurays releases.

I would really like to know where Disney stands with 3D Bluray and whether or not the format will get the exceptional support it had from you guys for years. I really don't want to have to import your 3D releases from overseas, because I really want to continue my support and purchase of U.S. Disney 3D Bluray releases, as I have since I got my 3Dtv back in 2011.

Respectfully and Sincerely,
Matthew Seeley
