Is this supposed to be an "official" MGM studio thread? I would suggest a name change if it is going to be located in the Studio and Distributor sub-forum. If it is a MGM (and Olive apparently) b*tch thread then it should be in the main forum.

The term "catalog title" does not mean all older movies.

Its a studio's/distributor's title that they have in their catalog of films. For example: Nebraska is a catalog title for Paramount despite being released a few months ago simply because it is part of Paramount's catalog of films.

For MGM, their catalog titles include the 1976 & 2013 versons of Carrie, the 1967 & 2006 versions of Casino Royale, Honeymoon in Vegas, and The Alamo (1960).

-

It seems that even though MGM chooses which titles are released on Blu-ray, Fox may not want to spend the money on producing the Blu-ray for them. Especially if the DVD didn't sell as many copies as desired or simply didn't move as quickly. So MGM has to go with another distributor to get these titles out.

You really think they'd reply, and with an honest and forthcoming explanation?

And speculation isn't valueless; it can lead to some good realizations and ideas.

MGM/Fox are doing just fine letting someone else release their films for them. If the studios themselves start releasing their own titles again this is what we're going back to:

zero extras
crappy photoshop art
generic cases
eco paks

I'm perfectly happy with KINO, Shout and other independents licensing studio films. About the only area we could see a slight benefit is in price structure. But I'm not willing to trade quality releases for dump bin material.

Wouldn't you just be better off downloading and watching movies on youtube? If it's cheap you want that's the way to go

I'd love to see Of Mice and Men (1992) to get the Blu-ray treatment, I think its always underrated when it comes to home video releases.

As well as A Bridge Too Far and Battle of Britain. Those are two other titles that need new masters and AVC.

I think for purposes on here, catalog title means titles that have not yet been released on blu-ray, but were already in their "catalog" on other formats (or maybe never released to home video at all). Could be a film from 2000's, or 1950's. Not necessarily to do with age, but I think at some point a release is so new you don't refer to the film as a "catalog title".

Obviously going forward, anything they own home video rights to is in their "catalog". But if Paramount did a different packaging of Nebraska next week, I doubt many would refer to that release as a "catalog title", even if that were technically correct.

Add the Graduate... another relatively poor blu-ray. A shame that some of their most iconic films received such poor treatment. 90th Anniversary would have been a perfect time for them to fix up some of the stuff that wasn't done properly before.

Yeah, I want Mississippi Burning as well. Being from MS and being a history nut it's always held a fascination for me. It's also one of Hackman's best role's. I actually got to see Alan Parker at a local restaurant when they were filming this one.

These days I'm all about bare bones discs. Give me modern transfers, fine detail, no tinkering, 1080p, lossless audio, and I'm 100% happy.

yup, that's me. I haven't seen a special feature willingly (except for titles I review) in over 10 years. pretty cover art is nice, but not something that would cause me to not buy a film. great picture, great audio, no tinkering and we're good

As if they would give you an actual answer.

There's a lot of MGM titles I would like to have. Some they tend to release in the UK before the US, so I just imported instead of waiting. The two Poltergeist sequels come to mind. The Birdcage is another, but it was released in the US 4 months later, so...

Well, 'Last American Virgin' is pre '85' as well! So half of my wish list is being driven toward the wrong culprit!!
