My top five in no particular order:
The Wild Bunch - a great cast and wonderful action set pieces Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - just a fun movie, love the interactions between Newman and Redford plus Bacharach's peppy, poppy score The Good, The Bad and the Ugly - the quintessential spaghetti western, a true classic High Plains Drifter - Clint does a wonderful job emulating the spaghetti western style Once Upon A Time In The West - another Leone epic but while TGTB&TU is a great popcorn epic, this one is a true piece of art that seems to improve each and every time I watch it. My three wishes: Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid - a great Peckinpah flick that was sadly butchered by the studio. I'd love to see a blu with all three cuts of the film. Even though the theatrical cut was much maligned I'd love to see it as I truly love the two cuts on the DVD. Bob Dylan's music is so cool! Companeros - Sergio Corbuccis tongue in cheek crowd pleaser... Franco Nero and Tomas Milian are great as usual, Jack Palances character inspires a thousand WTFs and the theme song is insanely catchy! Paint Your Wagon - a bit of a guilty pleasure but it's a western with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin AND a Broadway musical, it's just so crazy but it works! Well not really but I like it. |

My list is a little long but I used to get tortured by these by my dad on weekends when they were on TBS and i think Family Channel/Pat Roberson in early 80's when cable came around. I've found these grew on me once I hit 40, so there's more than 5.
The Searchers Red River Rio Lobo The Good the Bad and the Ugly True Grit The Outlaw Josey Wales Shane The Treasure of Sierra Madre most people probably don't think of this as a western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Will Penny Want The Shootist The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance The Missing not before 1980 but I love this one as an all time favorite Last edited by Brewc; 07-06-2014 at 05:29 PM. |

Why the 1980 cutoff? Because of Heaven's Gate? Heavens Gate didn't kill the Western. The western was long before 1980 on it's way out. Even the John Wayne westerns of the 1970's were like a fish out of water. Nobody in the Disco era wanted anything to do with westerns.
But I will play along: 1. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly 2. High Noon 3. The Searchers 4. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 5. Once Upon a Time in the West * Also I know not a true Western but might put Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the conversation. |

1. Lonely Are The Brave
2. Monte Walsh 3. The Tall Men 4. The Professionals 5. The Man From Laramie In the case of the first three they are all German releases, and although I have a good number of other Westerns ( over 50 ) I like quite a lot, in the case of The Tall Men it is 2:55 OAR, the scenery is great and it stars Clark Gable. Lonely Are The Brave is a great modern Western with Kirk Douglas, Monte Walsh starring Lee Marvin is wonderful and whose performance is right up there and of course The Professionals. I had a tough time choosing between these and The Big Country, Man Of The West, Jeremiah Johnson, The Magnificent Seven, True Grit and a few others. I have so many on dvd and there are many good ones such as White Feather, The Last Wagon, Stalking Moon, Water Hole #3, etc. Three would be: Mackenna's Gold Hombre Young Billy Young Last edited by KyotoKid; 07-07-2014 at 05:08 PM. |

I think most of my top favorite westerns on my list are there mainly because of the cinematography. Not only are they entertaining films - but I think the scenery in them are gorgeous:
1. THE SEARCHERS 2. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST 3. THE BIG TRAIL (this one really blew me away. Not only does it mark John Wayne's feature film debut but it was filmed in a rare widescreen process in the 1930's) 4. TRUE GRIT 5. HEAVEN'S GATE (I know you said before 1980, but I've really grown to like this one) My blu-ray wish list: 1. THE SHOOTIST - I notice this on other's list ![]() 2. WESTWARD THE WOMEN - A William Wellman film that has Robert Taylor leading a wagon train of mail-order brides from Chicago to California. Exceptionally gritty... 3. THE IRON HORSE - John Ford's epic silent 4. YELLOW SKY - Another William Wellman western this time with Gregory Peck and Anne Baxter. 5. TERROR IN A TEXAS TOWN - this quirky film from director Joseph Lewis (GUN CRAZY) that has Sterling Hayden coming to town to avenge the death of his father armed not with a six-shooter...but a harpoon!
