Bale with Keaton a close second. While he obviously went overboard with the voice Bale brought back the intensity that Clooney's (forgive me) "chill" batman was sorely lacking. I mean seriously he was calm the entire movie!

This is showing my age, but when I think of Batman, I think of Olan Soule from the Superfriends.
As far as movies go, I thought Keaton and Bale both did a nice job. I never saw, or intend to see, the Batman movies with George Clooney or Val Kilmer. |

It's a tough one between Keaton and Bale. I like both of their performances for very different reasons. I think Keaton's approach made Bruce Wayne seem more down to earth, somebody who was very easy to root for and it contrasted well with his cold and calculated portrayal of Batman.
Bale's Bruce Wayne and Batman come across as more vulnerable than Keaton's, especially in the 1st and 3rd films, though I liked his performance in the 3rd film the most. It's a tough one, but I think that Bale edges it for me based on the 3rd film. He gets to convey all aspects of Bruce Wayne and Batman and does so with conviction at times. Though I think he is helped a lot by the writing and character development. In Batman Begins, we see Bruce Wayne's fears and phobias haunt him well into adult life, fears and phobias we ourselves relate and that makes his journey that bit more engaging. |

Bale. Any other choice is just silly. Keaton was surprisingly good as Batman, but the films were too limited with little focus on the actual character of Bruce Wayne. Honestly, I thought Kilmer was a better choice than Keaton. At least Kilmer, at the time, was kind of physically imposing and was very good as Bruce. The movie ultimately let him down though.

Actually Adam West did play Batman in the movies, there was a theatrical movie.
Aside from West who will always be Batman to me (showing my age), I pick Keaton solely based on performance and fit alone. While it's tough to look at how he can't turn his head in the mask, it actually forces a unique mannerism to his portrayal. Adam West was also forced to deal with the same issue, and he had his own way of dealing with it too. I thought Keaton's movies had the gothic tone and look that Bale's movies are missing. Clooney and Kilmer would have been fine if their movies didn't suck. Bale doesn't look like Batman or Wayne to me at all, regardless of his acting chops. |
