come on.... it isn't like Madonna fans consider "Shanghai Surprise" a classic. Desperately Seeking Susan definitely deserves the Blu-Ray treatment and it does represent an era gone by of NYC in the early 1980s. Madonna was probably her most effortlessly cool in this film, and Rosanna Arquette was good as well. For a lot of us, this movie has been one we've been wanting for a long time to get the HD treatment. Granted, it's a 30 year old low budget film but I know there's still improvement compared to the DVD we have.

Unless you absolutely have to own every single movie released on blu-ray, I don't see why it bothers you if you didn't like a movie getting released. All you have to do is not buy it, there are many of us who will bite the bullet.

I'm an 80s kid... Madonna, along with Prince and Cyndi Lauper, was about the coolest person in the world to me when I was that age. I had the VHS tape of this and watched it too many times to count. This was when I absolutely idolized her and the movie manages to hold up even after all these years because it actually is a decent film. There's good Madonna films (Evita, A League Of Their Own) and there's awful Madonna films (Swept Away, The Next Best Thing, Shanghai Surprise)... I think the vast populace would put DSS in the first batch.

Absolutely. I have very little interest in this title itself but I always flash to Hans Gruber's 'sooner or later, I might get to someone you do care about' line when I read about this kind of release.

Keep 'em coming.

edit: welllllllll, maybe 'very little' is overstating things. I wouldn't pay anything like twenty bucks for it but I could see being tempted if it ever dropped into the ten-twelve range. I do have a soft spot for the 80s.

I was in my early teens when this movie came out and I was totally in love with Madonna at the time.

I will get this if I can find it for a decent (i.e. cheap) price.

Eh, sadly, Madonna really never starred in a good movie. I can live with just But, from this cast, we could really use a blu-ray of Aidan Quinn's criminally underrated film Blink.

I know that it sounds lame when people say that you just had to be there.

When it comes to Desperately Seeking Susan, though...you just had to be there.

I had just turned 13 years old when Desperately Seeking Susan was released in theaters, and, although I was then old enough to see a PG-13 movie, my parents initially expressed disdain at the idea of my going to see this movie with friends. Madonna had released her Like A Virgin album just four months prior and was quickly establishing her public reputation as a alluring floozy of sorts who liked to push the envelope of good taste. In the end, my parents just sort of rolled their eyes, laughed, and let me go to the movie on release night with the other neighborhood kids.

Desperately Seeking Susan is just like Madonna's videos and public persona in that it is titillating enough to get attention, but it never ventures into the full realm of any sort of explicitness or controversy. It's actually a fun and good-natured little 1980s comedy along the same lines as innocuous films like Mannequin or Once Bitten. There's a distinct sort of coolness to the movie that I've always liked, though. Madonna drew people to the movie, but Rosanna Arquette is just as much of a hottie.

This movie is so gloriously 1980s that there should be a warning label on it. The force of my nostalgia is incredibly strong for this one for that exact reason, though.

Flaaargh, I can't get Express Yourself out of my head now.

****

edit: bah, why fight it. What's the point of ripping The Immaculate Collection if not to have it a few short mouseclicks away...

Great post, and agreed.

I am sure the same people who are all moaning that this is coming out on Blu-Ray are the ones who did the same when Legend Of Billie Jean was announced, another movie that spoke to 80's kids and has a cult following of those of us who watched it as kids, but baffles people who weren't of a specific age in 1985.

The Legend of Billie Jean blows this film away.

It even has a higher rating on imdb.

If they do land Valley Girl, that'll probably mean the rescuing of a number of excellent making-of featurettes that were only available on the initial, two-sided disc that were all dropped when MGM silently reissued it with the same UPC but only one side of the disc intact. Same would go for The Sure Thing.

I've also heard that in conjunction with the film's 25th Anniversary (and his new album), Weird Al will have some sort of announcement about UHF in a couple of weeks. That MGM DVD is also out of print...

I'd completely agree with this.

That said, I'm a MASSIVELY HUGE Madonna fan...and I can barely get through it. Bores me to tears.

Ha! I remember when Much Music (our version of MTV) came out there wasn't a lot of content initially and they played 'Get Into the Groove' all the time.

Probably the only reason I ever watched the movie.

Ah, the memories.

prey tell where did I knock The Legend Of Billie Jean? I seem to recall pointing out that it was a movie that 80s kids (which I was one) cherish but latter generations don't get the appeal of. I am very excited to get it next week.

Anyways, it isn't like Desperately Seeking Susan was a terrible movie... Rosanna Arquette won a BAFTA for it, although controversially in the Supporting Actress category which was funny because she was the star of the film and had twice as much screentime as Madonna did. Madonna has notoriously starred in some serious duds, but DSS is one of the few highlights in her filmography, at least from a critical/commercial standpoint (the others being Evita, Dick Tracy and A League Of Their Own, Truth Or Dare as well if you count that).

I hope this leads to more 80's faves of mine getting released.

I recently watched an HD broadcast of Desperately Seeking Susan. Only watched it about half way though. It was okay, but I was never really a fan of the movie as much as I'm a fan of the era. Love the 80's. Just didn't really get into this movie.
However....

Even though it's unlikely WTG will be as enjoyable for me as it was back when I was a kid, I am more interested in seeing WTG than Desperately Seeking Susan.
