Well, as expected, The Place Promised in Our Early Days / Voices of a Distant Star Twin Pack will not come out this month. Even though Anime Ltd were hopeful for a release.

Quote:
Remember many moons ago how we were planning to release a Makoto Shinkai The Place Promised in our Early Days + Voices of a Distant Star twin pack, but there were some very lengthy delays with it and we haven’t talked about it for quite a while? Well, today we’re talking about it! The latest update is that things have progressed with this release and we’re hoping we will be able to (finally) bring it to you during this first quarter of the year.

So Your Name has turned out to be quite the phenomenon in Japan. It's box office is honestly quite unbelievable (in Miyazaki territory). I totally didn't expect Shinkai's popularity to leapfrog Hosoda's like that.

While I'd say that I'm generally a fan of Shinkai's work, and I'm always enamored with his visuals (I mean, AMAZING), I've always felt that his writing and storytelling has been on the weaker end. Which is one reason why the proclamations of him being a potential successor to Miyazaki has never sat quite well with me. (I find Hosoda to fit that bill a bit better, even if he has yet to reach the heights achieved by Miyazaki.) But with box office like what Your Name is achieving right now, perhaps the public has spoken. (Though Hosoda's box office has been quite impressive and is nothing to scoff at.)

But with this being Shinkai's biggest production and the word-of-mouth and reviews being quite good, I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

Can anyone that own any of the Hong Kong versions of Makoto Shinkai's blu-rays comment on how their compare to other versions? I'm trying to decide which versions to purchase.

Having only seen The Garden of Words, but all non-Digimon Hosoda films I agree with you. His writing appears to be secondary in priority to visuals, and it shows. I hope Your Name turns out to be big overseas though, maybe I'll get my normie friends to watch anime on the big screen with me.

I saw Your Name during my trip to Japan (it's still playing everywhere!), and I actually really enjoyed it! I still haven't seen A Place Promised In Our Early Days, but of the ones I've seen, this is by far Shinkai's strongest film to date.

There are still some issues here and there, but I actually cared about the characters for once, and the philosophical-sounding-but-actually-really-superficial voiceovers are kept to a minimum, which is definitely a plus (though I wish they were done away with entirely). There were actually some surprising moments within the story, and the fantasy elements were used quite well. I can see myself returning to this film a lot more than his past works, and is probably one my favorites this year.

I just watched the Hong Kong blu-ray of THE PLACE PROMISED IN OUR EARLY DAYS and it seemed fine to me. Good video and audio, English subtitles seem OK. Nice packaging, and the only Region A English-friendly release out there at this time.
