I saw this movie tonight as well. While the movie definitely falls into the horror genre, I found it refreshing that the characters were more than typical horror cardboard cliche' cutouts.
I agree with what someone said earlier that the drama is mainly in the sense of impending doom as felt and experienced through the characters moreso than with the action or horror sequences themselves.
Very Very good film, but man that ending will make you love or hate the experience, and it definitely shows that the director has balls for doing it his way.

I guest my question is: This is BD exclusive, if/when, right?

I thought that Sony recently own mgm.
Would they have some power over it?

As for Weinstein co, isn't that part of Disney? Or not anymore?

I'm so confuse who owns who these days.

Cool

I wouldn't call this a horror movie. It's heavily character driven and the human conflict within the store is the real movie, and with that, I liked it. I thought the creature designs and f/x were weak(the tentacle scene, for one). Yay everything's king sized. I've seen that before(King Kong).

The creature scenes really pulled me out of the movie, and I impatiently sat through them until I could see what was going on in the store again. The character development was great, one of King's greatest strengths in all his stories.

I thought the greatest fear was fear of the unknown. Honestly, I think if the audience never saw what was in the mist, yet characters were mysteriously being torn in two, it would have made it much more intense.

And wow, a dark depressing ending. Good stuff! Happily ever after doesn't need to be every ending in Hollywood. Good for you Frank Darabont.

Just saw the movie a couple a few hours ago and I loved it. It's a refreshing horror (and just as a movie itself) movie in a year full of disappointments. The Mist doesn't rely on cheesy loud noises to make you jump out your seat or excessive gore. Rather, the movie uses human nature to present the horror: what we would do in this situation, how we work together or against one another because of it. What happens in the store is what makes this movie.

There are many great things about this movie as there are bad things. Marcia Gay Harden is absolutely wonderful as the religious, Old Testament fanatic Ms. Carmody. She plays the role so adeptly that you would just LOVE to hate her. One of the best quotes I have heard in years came was delivered by her: "The day I need a friend like you, I'll squat and shit one out." Another good thing about the movie is the tension of wondering what is out there, what will happen next? Frank Darabont and his team pull off that aspect very well with the lighting and setting.

What I didn't like about the movie are the CGI work and the music at the end. The CGI is poorly executed on the first creature seen and the rest are only... passable. The music at the end (which I think is the only music in the whole movie) is appropriate in context but used in the wrong movie. The female voice singing expresses despair mixed with a sense of uselessness, but the style is so Middle Eastern and the volume so loud that it jars the viewer/listener out of the experience. As such, the film's good qualities are worth the ticket price--hell, Maria Gay Harden alone is worth the price if you're looking for great acting. You'll love it when she gets canned (literally by a senior).

The movie's end is pretty extreme and saddening at the same time. But in my opinion, it was a good ending and will shock some. Still, it was so depressing that I went to go watch Enchanted afterwards. LOL.

I enjoyed it.

Two problems for me however:

1. hystrionic character-drama ala "clue" or "LOST" (too soap-opera)
2. some pretty obviously "computer" CGI effects. I long for the days of physical things that actually got filmed... I have a hard time being frightened by something that's obviously a CGI illusion.

But overall still very much enjoyed the movie. Including the ending.

And it's MGM so should make a nice blu-ray. Actually, it should make a GREAT blu-ray. Can't wait to see how much better it looks in native 1080p24 than it did in the soft-focus 35mm release print I saw theatrically (most BDs have more detail than the image I saw projected).

Just to let you all know. This is going to be released on DVD on March 18th by Weinstein, not MGM. No word on any BD version unless Weinstein plans to announce at CES.

That's a damn shame. I really was looking forward to this on Blu-Ray.
Regarding Weinstein, wasn't there some talk from them about intentions to release films on Blu-Ray quite some time ago?
I guess none of it really matters anyways though, since they've pretty much been MIA for HD DVD for a long time now.

They were going to release both over seas on both formats but Weinstein got a court order to block the release on HDM, must be until they release it over here first, so they don't lose sales here for people importing it.
