Since the topic asks for which blu-ray titles are essential, and not which Oscar worthy films in general are essential, these are my picks:

The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series
Toy Story 1, 2, or 3
Avatar

Honorable Mention:

Life of Pi
Alfred Hitchcock: The Essentials Collection
Jaws

Same three for me. 3 modern classics, never looked better on home equipment, all just blow you away with PQ/AQ which is what this format is all about.

How could I pick just three? I guess I'll just go with the three highest rated films on TSPDT's aggregated list:

Citizen Kane
Vertigo
2001: A Space Odyssey

Blade Runner 5 disc
Star Trek The Original Series Seasons 1,2 and 3
The Wizard Of Oz

I think those would be a good start to get someone into blu-ray.

I'm not even going to bother racking my brain to come up with just three titles, but I would like to throw in a vote for Pan's Labyrinth.

Tough question! Does one select by way of the importance/impact of a film? The PQ/AQ that shows the capability of blu ray discs? By genre?

I will over complicate this and break it into categories.

Box Sets (films):

Box Sets (TV):

Nature Doc:

Horror:

Sci Fi:

Comic Book:

Drama:

Classic:

Russell Crowe:

well I've already gone overboard and am still not completely satisfied with my answers. Way to hard to narrow it down to just 3 and I'm not going to get into all the different genres any more than I did.

Last edited by BLUgrass; 09-18-2014 at 05:27 AM. Reason: Because Russell Crowe deserves his own section

Default Top Three Essential Titles to Any blu-ray Collection...

Only three ... three lousy titles out of film history?! Ye gads! You really know how to hurt a guy!

Well, I guess mine would be:

1.) "The Godfather"

2.) "The Godfather: Part II"

3.) "Blade Runner" (The Final Cut)

Honorable Mention to: "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Pulp Fiction", "Apocalypse Now", "Goodfellas", "Taxi Driver", "Fight Club", "Full Metal Jacket", "Donnie Darko", "Seven Samurai", "M", "Psycho", "Battle Royale", "The Ring"(original Japanese film), "A Clockwork Orange", and "A Serbian Film".

And if it were to be the top three television series...

1.) "Breaking Bad: The Complete Series"

2.) "The Sopranos: The Complete Series"

3.) "Utopia"(the brilliant and quite possibly best television show currently on the air - it's from England/not the silly reality show with the same title.) - of course HBO has already commissioned David Fincher to help them do an American version... because that always seems to work out so well.
