Considering this was an unintended, 100% post-production conversion done in 2010 by the Prime Focus team fresh off of Clash of the Titans... I would not hold out any hope for the 3D in this to be any good at all. Admittedly seeing it in 3D is the only reason I would ever bother watching this movie, but it'd have to be free on HBO on demand or something... definitely not gonna pay import prices for it.

With all the French 3D exclusives in the last couple of years, 3D is not dead yet. No matter how hard Disney tries to kill it. I dunno if I will pick this up or not. I remember this looking as bad as Clash of the Titans. But it is exciting seeing this older film from earlier in this current 3D revival. Maybe Astroboy, and some of the other 3D films, lost in the shuffle, will see 3D Blu-ray releases. It is looking more hopeful with this release.

What are some of the other French 3D exclusives?

AFAIK, The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet, Dark Country, Legendary: Tomb of the Dragon, Transcendence, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return, and lots of French language with English tracks or subs French or Belgium films and animations. Sometimes there are forced French subs on English language tracks and region coded B. Plus they also released several Disney and other Hollywood films in 3D that weren't released in 3D in the US.

I love French films. I buy a lot of them. Especially older French films. I don't mind subtitles.

I want to see French language 3-D films with English tracks and / or subs.

Guess I'll do some scouting around on amazonFrance.

Watched this 3D bluray yesterday.

I can unfortunately confirm : Region B locked and forced french subtitles.

But apart from that : an excellent DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO (48kHz, 16-bit), same extras as the US version + interviews + a tiny making of (for fans of the film... if they exist ).

How is the 3D ? Well, as you would have guessed it's not exactly Avatar, but for me it was not as bad as Thor.

The movie was not shot in 3D so it's clearly a conversion, but a lot of volume and depth is added in many scenes, making it a more fun experience than the 2D version.

Well, of course, the movie still is one of the very worst of Wes Craven, plagued by major plot holes, but for 3D completists I would go as far as to say it's almost a "must have".

Why they do this ?? what a let down. forced subtitles are a major distraction imo, so i guess i am not going to buy it anymore.

Wonder if using AnyDVDHD would let you strip out the subtitles?

The funny thing is I went to the movies and watched this in 3d and could not believe how bad the 3d was and people in front of me was lifting their glasses up to check if it was in 3d so I wasn't sold on buying this on blu ray and the subtitles just helped my decide not to.

Default gifted a copy

Got gifted a copy of this, so here's the stats. Region coded B. Forced subs that are in 3D. (my 3d blu-ray player sometimes has issues with subs, so YMMV) Original language track as well as French dub. 3D is superior to theatrical presentation I saw, so it is better than Clash of The Titans, but not as good as a majority of The Marvel Studio 3D converted films. One disk with 3D and 2D on same disk plus extras.

If you had to buy it would you? Is it worth the money to spend on and import?

I can also confirm that it does has forced French subs. My copy of Dark Country 3D (another "available only in France" 3D horror film) is the same way.

It is irritating, but after a while it's not such a big deal.

If I could get this for less than $20 US shipped, then maybe I would buy it. Otherwise, save your money for the tons of non-US released 3D blu-rays. I got gifted this because of the subs and the region coding and because I really like 3D.

Maybe. I use to recoded dvd, even a few field sequential ones to remove forced subs or change subs to English. I haven't tried anything like that with blu-rays yet.
