Well, the claim they used the wrong elements is plausible, but I think (and I have no evidence to support this, this is just a conspiracy theory) Disney deliberately used the censored version to try and increase the disc order for that version, reducing the production cost per unit, and they hoped nobody would notice, failed on that front...

That wasn't a British censorship issue, but a German one, I think.
It's cheaper for them to make one ROM image for several Euro countries (UK, France, Germany, Spain etc) so all the countries got hit by one's squeamishness.

The same has happened to countries using one video standard in the past (Australia getting hit by British BBFC pantywaist cuts).

Again just enforces a multi regional player. I mean if you're on here, you collect blu rays, you know this is the better format etc etc etc, why would you not ensure you have best version of X film? Be it cuts or quality.

Generalisation, not directed at you my friend.

Touche. That's why I do a quick Google to check that I'm not about to leave the store with an inferior product before I buy a disc.

Avengers wasn't any particular reason to buy a multi-region player since the Italian region B disc was uncut.

Back on topic, as pointed out by other members - the blu-ray situation is far more user friendly than dvd ever was:

Only 3 world regions.

Region B covers a much wider territory than dvd region 2.

Huge amount of releases are actually region friendly.
