Question is:
is there any chance this steelbook might feature any of the extras from the Koch Media digibook edition (director's commentary, gag/b-roll reel, workprint Beta tape), or will it be barebones like the standard Anchor Bay disc (which would then be a total scam given the uglyness of the thing)?

I don't know how people don't like the artwork. It looks so kick-ass it almost makes the movie worth buying.

I agree. But most are gonna balk because due to Marvel being nearly broke at the time of this film's release, they didn't license out "the skull"(among other things) which is why it never appears in the film. Which was totally dumb then, and would be dumb to omit now. Which is why I like it. The skull IS the The Punisher.
Maybe they could've made the skull appear as fog in the background, or something like that...kind of an homage to realizing it wasn't in the film, but rightfully belongs in the film.
Plus it goes great with the previous Punisher steelbook. Zavvi just needs to War Zone and make it a white background, and we'd have a Red/White/Blue Punisher steelbooks trilogy!

It is artistically ugly and not one part of it bar the title has anything to do with the movie maybe?

It has nothing to do with a matter of "licensing the skull".

Marvel and Stan Lee (credited as consultant) DID give their support to the film (even though they've distanced themseves from it since then and will now deny it). The movie rights to most Marvel characters were then owned by the production company New World Pictures (formerly founded by Roger Corman).

It has been said numerous times by the director and producer that then (when comic book were not as popular in movies) they wanted to approach it more realistically (spandex suit didn't seem appropriate for a gritty movie like this), and opted to place the skull on the Punisher's daggers (and his face make-up). The script had him spray-paint the skull on his shirt before the final showdown but I think it's producer Robert Kamen (writer of the KARATE KID, TRANSPORTER, TAKEN and 5TH ELEMENT) who fought against it (which writer Boaz Yakin was upset about). Director Goldblatt later said he now wishes they had put it on and would digitally add it if he could.

The costume and production designer was Norma Moriceau who worked on MAD MAX (as well as CROCODILE DUNDEE, DEAD CALM and PATRIOT GAMES), the look of the character was pretty much a mix of MAD MAX with a touches of George Michael and Elvis Presley (Dolph is a big fan).

Nobody minded about the X-MEN costumes when Bryan Singer's movie came out by the way.

I highly recommend Mark Goldblatt's audio commentary that's on the German/Austrian 3-discs Koch Media edition, as well as this podcast interview he gave on his career:
http://geeknation.com/podcasts/kille...ark-goldblatt/
(starting at around 35 mins in, and 1h49 mins for THE PUNISHER)

Marvel Comics (who were in financial dire straits at the time) only granted the film-makers a provisional license on rights for the character of The Punisher. This effectively meant that the production team could only really use the name of the character and not any of his defining traits, including his famous skull T-shirt.

From my 25 years of research and archives on the subject, I'm pretty sure that's statement is made up. But true they needed money enough to sell they characters to New World. Like the Michael Pare fact, it's not true according to Goldblatt.

Haha, but yet everyone will reference them at some point.
Much like this message board, the info is policed by it's own. So any misinformation it usually removed sooner rather than later.

Be that as it may...I like the skull, so I like this steelbook.
As I said the skull IS the Punisher. They belong together.

Yeah, I don't care who's right or wrong I was just pointing out that it could be wrong, since they're usually added by random people. It could also be 100% accurate.

I like the skull as well, just not on this steel with that ugly color and background image. I just wish they had Dolph on the front looking badass, that's all.

It's fact that Marvel did not grant full rights to the character for this film, which is why everything is radically different from the comic.
I just think it's a shame, because almost 20yrs later Marvel would find it's "film stride" with a little film called Iron Man...and the rest is history.

Like I said, I don't really care about all that, I'm just disappointed in the design, skull or not.
