Friends was opened up not cropped! Just read some of the reviews, there's stuff at the side that was never meant to be seen because it was shot for 4:3 but at 16:9.

Okay, I'll dig more into this. Thanks!

Edit: I've updated the list to reflect your correction. Thanks again!

In another thread, someone mentioned that the credits are in a different aspect ratio from the rest of the movie. I don't have a copy on hand to watch and provide more detail in the OP, though.

Brother Bear (2003)
Changes between windowboxed 1.75:1 and 2.40:1.

The DVD edition contained this version (OAR) and also had second disc with a 'family friendly' ratio of 1.66:1 (cropped at the sides)
IIRC, 1.66:1 is a favored format for animation in Europe (or parts of Europe). So some 1.66:1 versions might have been for the European market.

IIRC, I also read somewhere that B&W films are often produced with a requirement that a color version be done as well, for the European market.

As my German for Beginners book put it: Andere lander, andere sitten (umlauts ignored, I just don't recall where they go).

They are not in a different aspect ratio as such... just have wide blacks edges which fade into the Academy shaped main titles.

A lot of movies are shown open matte on TV, but my list only includes official changes or alterations, approved by the directors.

Having said that, the changes to Underworld: Evolution are interesting.

Sorry, thought you meant in general. And I haven't seen a lot of films have open matte ratios on TV. From my personal experience, 95% are just zoomed in & cropped. I watched Underworld open matte in full on HBO On Demand, it was AMAZING! A friend of mine told me about Evolution, seeing those caps makes me wish I had a HD DVD player... I love Underworld in it's OAR, but I would love to own the open matte version as an alternative.

HD Goofnut started a thread about movies with altered aspect ratios.

Hm, upon reading through HD Goofnut's thread, I just discovered that Stuck in Love was 2.40:1 in theaters but 1.78:1 on BD.

Does anyone know if it's open matte or cropped?

Edit: It looks open matte and cropped.

It is both, more on the top and bottom but less on the sides.

Terminator 2 was shot on Super 35mm film, with the Theatrical version exhibited in a 2.35 aspect ratio and the original, full-screen VHS transfer opened up to a full 1.33. The Academy transfer has never been made available on dvd or BD as far as i know. Would be interesting to see how it compares visually...

T2 wasn't simply 'opened up' to 1.33, the movie was selectively reframed throughout as per all of Cameron's 4:3 transfers.

We will never see it. After Aliens Cameron decided that he liked the 2.39:1 ratio from Super 35mm better than the 1.85:1 ratio from standard 35mm. As a matter of fact the only reason Avatar is 1.78:1 is because of its IMAX exhibitions.

I don't think it's available on BD, but More American Graffiti changes between 1.33, 1.85 and 2:35 I believe.
