Akira has both a 35mm and 70mm negative for it (shot twice with different framings and backgrounds).
Again, what is your source for this?

Geneon wouldn't be releasing it here in HD even if they had the rights, as they've pretty much been shuttered (sadly). As for Alita, where did you hear the author was blocking rights, and why? Did he hate the anime version that much? Speaking of which, with the manga finished, I'm suprised they haven't gone back and done an all new series...

Man am I glad I bought the original DVD release here in the US when it came out...

The blocking of Alita/Gunnm is an age old rumor that's come from an anime con many years ago. At this point it would be very hard to track down the exact quote. He really didn't like the anime OVA, and it's never been released on DVD in Japan as a result. ADV got home video licensing rights for the show before DVD existed, and before it got locked down.

What's important to remember is that in Japan, the author of a creative work has absolute control according to the legal system, even in the case of a "work for hire" (which this isn't). Kishiro would thus be in his full rights to revoke the release rights for it. Like other rumors, this one could turn out to be untrue, but I'm very much inclined to believe it simply because there's no other concievable reason why it hasn't ever been released on DVD in Japan.

As for new anime, while I agree now would be a good time to look into making one again, is Last Order finished? I haven't kept up on things manga wise.

Really? Geneon have been selling HD VOD versions of Akira on xbox live. I know that's download, not optical, but still..
Bandai Visual had the Live version playing at their booth at Otakon. They were also using Geneon as a distributor before they went under, so like so many Dreamworks titles were listed under "Universal", same thing.

Source on that they throw out cels? 15 years of cel collecting for starters

I've seen many cels and even some production from Akira, they're all 2.20:1. The production cels were always in the AR of the film you're making. even when you were doing a multilayer tracking shot (I own a cel with background from Yamato like that, it's 2 1.33:1 cels of Sanada (Sandor)'s shoulder and the engineer's son and Dash on the other cel, then the background.

Watch the "Akira Production Report" that's on the 2 disc DVD, they show them shooting it for both the 70 and the 35mm versions.

Just like it took the rampant bootlegging of Five Star Stories to finally get it reissued. The LD was going for up to and including $400 at one point

I don't have the American release since I can rent the extraless Japanese version whenever I feel like watching it. Does it specifically show them using different framing and backgrounds for the 70mm version as you claim?

I just checked it. All the cels and backgrounds they show being shot, and all of the storyboards in the extensive galleries are 2.20:1. Doing a direct comparison, it looks like the 35mm version may even just be a center crop.

No, they are different

All releases of Akira have been framed between 1:66:1 (japanese letterbox releases) and 1.78:1 (US DVD release). There has never been a 2.20:1 release

I think I just worded it badly.

Some shots were done twice and recomposed for the different AR, or so I'm told.

No, I asked one of the guys at the TBS booth at Comic Market back in August but they couldn't say. I hope it comes soon, I haven't seen past the 1st ep yet since I'm waiting to watch it in Blu. The last volume of the DVD just came out a couple months ago, so hopefully it'll be released sometime soon...

a cell is the animation picture because before computers became part of animation artwork cells were made instead because we are talking about a really old movie

As for Kanon, Air has been one of the more consistently selling BDs on Amazon JP, and anime in general has been doing quite well, so I figure it'll be one of those titles they'll seriously consider doing a hidef release of. I think they'll wait a bit longer for the market to grow, since releasing multi-episode TV series is costly and a lot more risky than doing single movies.

Cels were in common usage until about 3-4 years ago in Japan, and even US-oriented productions were still using them 5 or so years ago.

I highly recommend buying cels as artwork. They're beautiful, and you actually own a piece of your favorite film. I've got a pile of Porco Rosso cels, some of which were likely actually drawn by Miyazaki himself

Hey, I have the DVD to Battle Angel. But the manga is 1000x better.
I can't wait to see what the new movie will look like.. and yet I dread it at the same time. I don't know if an American director can match the story and characters from the manga.
But I will keep my eyes open. ANyone have any info on this btw?

I know about Air, but looking on the forums around the net mentioned that they are just upconverts and i guess they didn't take the time to do a full 1080P real master or something like that. Im in the procces to watching the Air fansub see if i like it, i have Kanon and i love it, im also following Clannad, but that one is somewhat iffy.

That's just it - Air is an upconvert (it's not that they didn't have the time, it's that they didn't have the source material) and it's still doing quite well on a completely new format that requires new hardware to play it back. Now take that as a baseline, and imagine how something like Kanon is going to do.
