[Show spoiler]Actually the movie is about a woman engulfed by depression (Mr Babadook) over her annoying child and husbands death.

This is what the filmmaker has said in interviews. The idea behind a movie is factual. It's your reaction and interpretation that is subjective.

I have to agree. I didn't find anything frightening about the film, and Friedkin's quote has me scratching my head.

I was always buying from JB HI-FI,but now they have freaking 8.50$ shipping per blu ray, with 12 items in cart shipping is over 100$!!!!!
Thanks
I have ordered some from JB, but yes their shipping is expensive at 8.50 per disc. I contacted their customer service and asked them if there was a way to combine the shipping and the person wrote back stating that it should combine in the final checkout, but of course it doesn't!

As for the Babadook I actually bought it on ebay from an Aussie seller. Was cheaper than going through JB.

I completely disagree. Saw this movie 2 nights ago, and it underwhelmed me. I admit, the woman's acting was very good, but the story itself was rather dull and it did not scare me one bit.

Very disappointed. It's not bad, but nowhere near the masterpiece others are calling it.

I really wanted to like it more than I did. I guess because of all the hype. It is a good movie, don't get me wrong. However, I'd barely classify it as a 'horror' film. It's more of a psychological drama / thriller. I'm proud to have it in my collection, but it's not something I will lump in with any of the classics/greats in the horror genre.

[Show spoiler]No, I don't think that's the idea of the movie. The father being killed the same day the boy was born lead to the fact that the boy was always a reminder of the father being killed. That's why the mother subconsciously felt the boy was bad because even if she loved him, he always reminded her of the grief.

I finally watched this on Amazon. It was really intense and nightmarish, with phenomenal sound design. I love that there weren't cheap jump scares. The acting was great all around. I was definitely leery of dark areas of my house at bedtime. My only complaint is the
[Show spoiler]anticlimactic ending. I feel like all of that buildup should have led to something scarier than what preceded the climax, but instead the scariest moments were in the buildup.
It would be a masterpiece if not for that.

This movie blows. The only thing it does right is guaranteeing I never have kids.

I'm curious, how old are you? Teens/early 20s? I think this movie might appeal more to adults, parents, and fans of more subtle psychological horror films (like Roman Polanski's apartment trilogy).

The problem with this film (and Snowpiercer as well) is that they have been SO overhyped they are going to disappoint people because they can't possibly live up to the hyperbole.

I liked Babadook, it was a really well made and acted film, but seriously it doesn't deserve the hype it's had piled on it and it certainly isn't the horror classic it's been hyped as.

That's how I felt. It was very well made, disturbing and original. But classic? For one, the ending wasn't very satisfying to me. And the Bababdook itself doesn't really matter at all does it?
[Show spoiler]I took it that it was just a manifestation of her grief and illness, not actually a physical entity. Which makes the ending odd -- what is she feeding worms to if it's not real? But then again, is the ending literal at all? Why can her son suddenly do this magic trick (with the dove) which is clearly beyond his ability?

I enjoyed it -- it was well worth seeing. Reminded me strongly of Repulsion in parts, but I wouldn't call it a classic, or even a great film. It's a good film, and I hope it becomes popular. It would be nice to see horror films aim a bit higher than the usual stupid shock cut/scare chord stuff that comes out all the time. For that, I applaud it.

[Show spoiler]I took Mr Babadook as a metaphor for depression which she sank into because she pretty much refused to discuss her husbands death or the problems she was having with her son. Once she acknowledges she has those problems and and faces then head on the depression disappears. So in away acknowledging that these things are a problem for her, that is like feeding it a little each day to keep the big monster (depression) at bay.

[Show spoiler]Like Impossible said, the monster is like a representation of her depression & all those bad feelings. It's all those things made REAL. The more and more she believed in it, the more real it became. She can't get rid of it and it's always there, the best she can do is keep it locked up in the basement. The monster IS real and she can't give it power to rule her life anymore. It's basically saying that we create our own monsters, and once we make them real we can only manage them.

I rented this on my Apple TV last night and it was a genuinely creepy movie, but more of a psychological thriller than horror. Like Kyle15 said, that's what I took away from the movie.
