Don't know how reliable this is (like who knows if it's just an April Fool's joke), but according to this site the new Godzilla film will be written and directed by Hideaki Anno (Gunbuster, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and Neon Genesis Evangelion among others) while the special effects will be handled by Shinji Higuchi (special effects director of the Gamera trilogy).

Those are some pretty inspired choices if true. So far it's looking promising.

Interesting. If true, I'd love to see what Anno could do with the big guy. I'm just so stoked that this film is happening. Almost as excited as I was for Edward's film.

Anime News Network:

Quote:
Evangelion director Hideaki Anno is the chief director and writer of TOHO's upcoming Godzilla film, the first new Japanese one in the franchise in 12 years. Shinji Higuchi, the director of Japan Sinks, Nobō no Shiro, and the upcoming live-action Attack on Titan films, is directing the new film and serving as special effect director as well.

The two longtime tokusatsu (special-effects) fans have been close friends for three decades. They previously collaborated on "Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru" (Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo), Ghibli's live-action tokusatsu short. Anno planned and wrote this short that draws inspiration from the Giant God Warriors in Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga and anime film, and Higuchi directed the short.

Higuchi worked as a storyboarder for the Evangelion television series and the three recent films, and he served as assistant director on Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise. (Anno was an animation director on that film.)

Higuchi has also served as the special effects director for the Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Advent of Legion, and Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys films. With Higuchi's collaboration, Anno curated a tokusatsu exhibition that drew 291,575 visitors at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo in 2012.

Anno (left in photo) received the offer to work on the film at the end of January 2013. Mentally exhausted after 2012's Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, he declined the offer once. However, TOHO's earnestness and Higuchi's enthusiasm eventually won him over, and he agreed to work on the project.

Anno is working on Studio Khara's fourth and final new Evangelion film, and the new TOHO Godzilla film is limited in budget and production time compared to Hollywood. However, Anno said that he has pride in the new Godzilla project as a film, and is making both that film and the new Evangelion film with all his effort.

Higuchi (right in photo) entered the film industry when he worked on the 1984 Godzilla film, so he remarked with delight on directing the new Godzilla film, "Finally, the time has come." He added, "Playtime is over," and acknowledged the pressure on him. Still, he vowed, "Next year, I will deliver the greatest and worst nightmare to everyone."

TOHO unveiled an image (pictured above right) of the foot of the new Godzilla on Wednesday. According to Cinema Today, the foot is indicative of the TOHO's new Godzilla being the tallest one yet, towering over the 108-meter-tall (about 355-foot-tall) incarnation in Gareth Edwards and Legendary Pictures' 2014 Hollywood film. The setting of TOHO's new Godzilla flm is Japan.

Anno is now writing the new Godzilla film's screenplay. Filming begins this fall, and TOHO will release the film in theaters next summer.
Crunchyroll:

Quote:
The Oricon online entertainment portal has published a new feature on the forthcoming 2016 Godzilla film being prduced by Toho after the most recent Hollywood Godzilla movie released last year.

Key details to take away from the feature center on the timeline of the film's production, which began shortly after Hideaki Anno completed work on Eva 3.0 and admitted that he fell into another depression as a result. After the first offer was made for him to work on the new Godzilla film in January 2013, and initially refused due to his mental state, he chose to accept the film project after seeing that longtime friend and collaborator Shinji Iguchi was involved.

He then accepted the film project in March 2013 with Higuchi and they settled on a theme in May and presented a draft of the plot to Toho in June of 2013. Anno subsequently came up with the idea for the Animator Expo in November 2013, then went back to Khara in early 2014 to work on that project. He said it was necessary to work on something besides Eva to begin again. Anno is the Chief Director/Writer of the film while Higuchi is the secondary director and main special effects director.

TOHO also unveiled a new image of the foot of the new Godzilla with the feature. According to additional details in Cinema Today, the foot is representative of TOHO's new Godzilla being the tallest monster yet, towering over the 108-meter-tall monster in last year's Godzilla film. TOHO's new Godzilla film is set in Japan and Anno is currently writing the new Godzilla film's screenplay, with filming set to begin this Fall. TOHO is set to release the film in Japanese theaters next Summer.
And August Ragone writes about it on his blog:

Quote:
The news only broke a short time ago in Japan as I begin to type (2:00 PDT), but according to the regarded film site, Oricon, not only has the author of the screenplay for Toho's upcoming, yet untitled, domestic Godzilla movie been announced (of which I first reported outside of Japan, here), but that the film boasts two directors; one credited as the "Supervising Director" and "Screenwriter," while the other has the "Director" and "Visual Effects Director" credits.

The new Godzilla will start shooting this fall and is slated for release in Japan next summer. Both of these exceptional filmmakers are life-long friends, and are very well-known outside of Japan, mostly for their work with the Gainax animation house on such hit anime series as NADIA, SECRET OF THE BLUE WATER (1990) and NEON GENESIS EVANGELION (1995), but they are also no strangers to the world of Tokusatsu (visual effects films): Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.

Perhaps you don't realize what this means. It is momentous.

Director Higuchi (b. 1965), who posted photos of an empty Toho Studios conference room this past weekend, is no stranger to the realm of the giant monster movie, supervising and directing the visual effects for highly-lauded "Gamera Trilogy" of the 1990s. His revolutionary vision of miniature effects stunned audiences and turned the industry upon its head. Higuchi has helmed such films as THE SINKING OF JAPAN (2006) and upcoming two-parter ATTACK ON TITAN (2015).

And before you ask, Higuchi's association with the Big G goes back to his serving as an effects assistant on RETURN OF GODZILLA (1984). But, since he was swept up with Gainax, drawing storyboards for Hiroyuki Yamaga's WINGS OF HONNEAMISE (1987) and then NADIA, it wasn't until 1995 that he returned to visual effects, and another six years before he supervised a sequence for GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK (2001). This time, he's getting his own Godzilla.

Coming into the field as a hardcore fan of Eiji Tsuburaya's visual effects films, Director Anno (b. 1960), was one of many Tokusatsu Maniacs who became swept up in the Anime Boom of the '70s and '80s, being a hardcore fanatic of the seminal Space Battleship Yamato franchise, he channeled most of his energies into that field, creating the singular anime series of the last 20 years. And now, Hideaki Anno is making a Godzilla film. Let that sink in.

According to the Oricon article, in which the directors were asked for a message to Godzilla fans concerning this latest resurrection, also details Anno's conflict in having to delay the next and final EVANGELION film in order to take up the Big G's reigns, while Higuchi expressed his passionate "Love of Godzilla." But, while both men are determined in their solidarity, what is their state on mind going into this production with so much at stake?

Stay tuned to this blog for a full translation later this evening!
And here's our first promo picture for the new film:

No, the sequel to the American 2014 film is coming in 2018, this 2016 film is an unrelated Japanese production.

I'll be interested to see if he'll be a villain again as he was most of the time in the Japanese films. I wouldn't mind seeing him flatten Tokyo one more time.

I'll definitely check this out.

Hopefully it's in theaters world wide 2016.
I can imagine they'll dub Godzilla 2016 for each language per country instead of offering subtitles, though many times subtitles with the originally spoken dialog in the movie offers a more authentic experience.

As far as I'm concerned if Toho pumps out a new Godzilla franchise after this film ,who will actually give a shit about sequels to the mediocre Edwardszilla?

Yeah, this pair being in charge of the movie has given me the hope it could be something special. And since they've apparently had two years to plan it out and write it, and seem to have more creative control than filmmakers who worked on this series in the past did, that's also very encouraging. It seems Toho have finally learned they can't just rush the movies out as quickly as possible and hope for the best, like they did with the Millennium series for example.

Hey, there's no guarantee this will be better than the '14 movie, regardless of what you thought of that one. Even with the dream team they've put together for this film, things could go wrong. Even the most talented people mess up sometimes.

They had better release this worldwide like Gareth did with his film.
If not then no Godzilla 2018 for them.

Default Watch: Directors of Godzilla '16 Level Tokyo in Giant Monster Short Film.

Before Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi signed on to direct Godzilla 2016, they partnered for a short film in the same genre under Studio Ghibli.

Acting as a loose prequel to Hayao Miyazaki's Nassicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Anno and Higuchi's Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo (2012) gives us a small taste of things to come. The film was made in conjunction with Anno and Higuchi's Tokusatsu Museum Exhibit and has received overwhelmingly high marks from fans and critics.

If the dark atmosphere, attention to detail and callbacks to cultural anxieties in this short are anything to go on, Godzilla 2016 could be one of the series strongest entries. Lets hope Anno and Higuchi bring their A-game.

Coming off mixed reviews of his live-action Attack on Titan film, fans may recall that Shinji Higuchi is also tasked with directing TOHO's upcoming Godzilla film with fellow tokusatsu lover Hideaki Anno. Helming the first Japanese Godzilla film in 12 years is no small feat. In fact, Higuchi almost turned down the offer because of the sheer amount of pressure that comes with directing such an iconic monster.

Details on what to expect are scarce and Higuchi isn't allowed to say much. What he did reveal in an interview with the Associated Press is that Anno finished the script just recently and shooting will begin in September. Fans that took issue with the special effects and budget of Attack on Titan can expect a similar look. Higuchi calls the blend of actors moving through miniatures (a staple of the early Godzilla films), computer graphics, and special effects a "hybrid." This was utilized on the Titans and the new Godzilla film will get the same treatment.

He also promises that this will be the scariest Godzilla yet, quoting the horrors of the real world, like 9/11, the March 11 tsunami, and subsequent Fukushima nuclear crisis having stripped the the world of its innocence. That said, he also says the film is going back to the basics.

"Perhaps we are all waiting for that horrible thing that's within us that we fear."

Higuchi and Anno previously collaborated on "Kyōshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru" (Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo), Ghibli's live-action tokusatsu short. Higuchi's other special-effect director credits include Japan Sinks, the Gamera films, and the 1984 Godzilla film.
