Can you watch a 3D Blu-ray on a 2D TV?

First of, let me apologize if this is in the wrong area....

My question is this:

I just recently got a Sony 3D Blu-Ray/Surround Sound System.
I have a normal old 42", 1080p, 120hz LCD TV.
If I put a 3D disk in the player will the Image on my TV look distorted or will it Convert it to 2D?
Or is there a setting somewhere that does it?
Or is the Player going to know that it's not a 3D TV and ask if I want it displayed in 2D instead?
