One of my blu players, my cheap sony bdp-1100, has lasted 2 years so far and that's playing it every single day. It has serious mileage on it so, it really just depends on the optical drive. Sometimes you get a great one and sometimes you get a lemon!

Hi Dylan34,

It seems you got a good Sony player that is lasting. Never had any problems with my old Samsung DVD player in comparison to the problems I am having with my Sony blu ray player.

What's up there Movie shy! Yep, I bought the cheap Sony because I needed another player in one of the other rooms. But, I also bought a Sony because 9 times out of 10 they are known for their quality products. I'm sorry you got a bum one but it happens from time to time with any well known brand name product. Do you have a warranty on the player, sorry if I missed whether you said you did or not. If you do, just have Sony to replace it. Chances of you receiving another player with problems is pretty low and Sony does make quality products.

I have a first-gen Magnavox that still works, though it's a bit slow loading Criterion, Fox, and Lionsgate BDs due to their complicated software architecture.

Earlier this year, I bought a Sony that has a lot more bells and whistles. It's fast, too. However, it also chokes on a couple of DVDs. It'll make loud grinding noises when it plays some DVDs, and it actually shuts off when I play Die Another Day and We Were Soldiers.

I have 9 current multi-region, that are all less than 2yrs old. My prior players(Panny and Sony mostly) all still work. However, have a Sony 350 that won't bistream center channel on some movies(it will decode just fine). Which...that is a head scratcher...

Why do you need 9 players? Do you live in a 8000 sq. ft. house?

House 1....

Main theatre has 2 BD players(a cantankerous Orei left on B)
Living room has 1
Office has 1
Master bedroom has 1
(These 4 are also equipped in at least 5.1)

2nd to 4th bedrooms each have 1

Makes 7(actually 8).

2nd house...(tiny little house on a river, used on weekends)

Main room has 1
Upstairs bedroom(technically upstairs is its own mini-studio, separate entrances) has 1
(Both with a 5.1 or 7.1 arrangement)

9(actually 10).

And...

9 42" to 54" plasma. 1 projector. 9 Directv boxes(main house). So "the having 9 BD players"...is the least extreme thing here.

I have an LG that I received in 2010 (for Christmas actually) and it works for the most part. I have always had a problem with Disney Blu-rays for some reason, the audio always goes crazy and only on Disney ones, so I end up using my ps3 for the Disney ones. Never have any problems with my ps3 though, they seem to last pretty well. Sometimes I swear the LG plays DVDs better than my Blu-rays, I guess its time to upgrade.

It depends on how much you use it, I guess. I bought my Oppo BDP-93 3 years ago brand new and it started dying on me a couple of weeks ago. It's out being repaired now.

When I watched a blu ray it started to skip or freeze every 10 minutes or so. At first I thought the disc were the problem, but it started to skip/freeze the very same discs I watched many times in the past without problems. I lived with this skippo-freezing for a while, but finally it got so annoying so I decided to open the player myself to see if I could clean the lens. I opened it several times and carefully cleaned it with different kinds of alcohols, finally with 99% isopropyl alcohol. The cleanings didn't seem to do anything, either good or bad. That's when I had to take a big bite out of the turd sandwich, take it to my electronics shop (which fortunately could repair Oppos, at least they were pretty certain that they could replace the laser). Now I'm looking at a $200-300 repair bill for this expensive monster, which is more money than many brand new players cost.

I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with my Oppo, I took care of it properly. But I did use it more and have it on more than an average person, I'm sure of that. Still, these Oppos were supposed to be built like a tank.

To make a long story short for new members here are the brands you should shouldn't buy when it comes to BD players: Samsung, Vizio, Pioneer, Philips, Toshiba, Seiki, Dynex, and Insignia.

Hey HD! I know Philips sucks because I had one and it burned up on me after about 7 months. But Pioneer? What's the story with their players? Some of their players list for 299, even 399. Do share please. Toshiba also? My HD-DVD player XA2 is still playing like a champ. What's wrong with their blu-ray players?

Pioneer players have had many FW problems and audio decoding issues over the years.

WHAT? Not Oppo! I see they're not invincible after all... The price that they charge for their blu-ray players, they should be guaranteed, marketed as maintenance free, covered with a lifetime warranty. They cost an arm, leg and a foot! You should've bought a much less expensive blu-ray player, and I bet it'll still be operable.

In December 2008 I bought a Samsung BD-P2500 and it still works beautifully.

Well, beautifully is an exaggeration since it's pretty slow to load stuff. But it has been that way since day 1, so there's nothing new wrong with it anyways.

But it's interesting, the other day I was thinking, "Man, this thing is 6 years old, and it's slow. I might want to update soon." Part of me wants to update, and part of me is like, "Heck with it. I'll wait till it breaks."

I dunno.

Yes, sadly an Oppo. And as I mentioned, I took really good care of it. Other than using it frequently, if you can count that as misuse. Yeah, I could've bought a less expensive player. But my Oppo is region free, not to mention really quiet.

I hope that by the time it breaks down on me again that there will be some cheaper region free players, hopefully some that don't require a code combination with the remote to set what region you want.

That's why I haven't bit the bullet - I have such bad luck with players, I refuse to pay more than $100 for one now. I got real sick of paying $200-250 each and having it cut out at 13 months, LOL - if I thought it would last me forever, or even 5-10 years, I'd invest in an Oppo, but just no way I'm going to make that investment with my luck with players, since really - they all play Blu-rays, and I've never seen features besides region-free that really made me go "oh I need that".

Am I wrong there? Since digital is digital, shouldn't every Blu-ray player output the same looking video? Since I have a Sony receiver, and just send the raw signal to it, there is no audio processing going on either. If you play two films side by side, eliminating load times, etc. - shouldn't Blu-ray players have consistent outputs?

I could be totally wrong...but I've never seen any difference. If I am wrong - educamate me, please!
