I own the PS3, and while I wish the resume would survive a power off, now that I know it doesn't, it isn't that tough to make a mental note of where I left off.
My question is, what is preventing BD-J from bookmarking the resume point? Is there something in the spec that prevents it, or has it just not been written yet?

I'm not sure I entirely agree with the OP, as has been pointed out, 2G and up players will not suffer the long load times, and I'd rather see the studios get more comfortable using Java so we can see more interesting uses of it down the road. What ticked me off about PoTC and DMC was that the buttons on the controller didn't function as they had previously. That is the type of thing I think the studios should be fixing now, so in 2 years users will get a consistent experience across disks, BD-J or not.

this is the best thread ive seen on blu-ray.com.
no bashing of the other format ,just good info.
this thread shows how smart folks are here.
id like a thread where we can ask blu-ray insiders about these concerns.
i have no doubt that when it gets in peoples head[jp6] that
blu-ray is a cool and hot format,it will take off.
that could happen anytime,so i would hope bd would have this thing with java
fixed.
load times faster etc.
blu-ray can take off soon or later but the point is i dont want this format to caught with its pants down.
so thats why id like to hear from insiders or people that work on this stuff.
any techs from sony, panny etc. lets hear from you.

Meh. I haven't noticed any significant loadtime. If its slow, I don't see it.

Java's a good thing.

I do agree with the OP in principle. Why author a disc with Java if there are no special features on the disc? The studios should be thinking of ways to smooth the end-user's experience every way possible.

So the authoring of a Blu-ray Disc in Java is inconsequential.
Agree with this, if PS3 is not struggling with software, the discs are fine, it's upto the CE's to improve their standalones.

Wow, I'm actually surprised that so many have voiced an opposition to convenience. There still seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding that I'm somehow advocating a lack of Java. Again, I'm saying if you're using Java for simplistic things that can be done without Java (like menu functions) then you're simply over-using it. For example, has anyone used the chapter selection menus on any of the Spidermans? Unless you're using the PS3 or, to a lessor extent, the BD30, these menus are cumbersome and an exercise in patience.

Remember, these formats are about entertainment and entertainment extends beyond just the feature itself to the entire experience. If the experience becomes frustrating due to the loss of simplistic, legacy features, it ceases to serve some of its purpose.

I agree that players will undoubtedly get faster, although Pioneer is on Gen 2, Sony on Gen 3 and they haven't gotten faster with Java (though the new Panasonic will probably drive them to have to work in that direction). I'm just curious as to why people would encourage the use of Java if it doesn't serve a purpose. The drive seems to be similar to that of the studios using it, making the disc seem cooler simply by virtue of it being Java, despite a lack of substance to support that feeling. I mean, did Reign Over Me really need Java authoring to enhance the experience of that disc? Sometimes the best feature for the film and the end user is simplicity.
