Sure, print 3000 to start, but don't say it's a limited edition.
Pretty sure Arrow said something along the lines of releasing it as a DVD once this run is out. Exactly like they did with Stray Cat Rock.

Still need to get the stray cat rock set - I was saving my Arrow points for it but sold out before I was about to order it (just before Christmas)

You might wanna be quick if you still want it. It's nearly OOP I gather 'cause it's only available on Amazon, MovieMail and eBay (Amazon seems to be cheapest). It was on Zavvi for about £23 until recently, so they must've sold out. Gonna be OOP very soon.

Oh, so they did finally sell out? Good for them. I was afraid that title was just sorta sitting there still with over a thousand copies. Good to see there's an interest.

It's really become necessary because they cannot foresee sales beyond the limited amount and they don't want to get stuck with a couple thousand copies they have to eat.

That's the thing. It could have just sat there but the limited edition status also helps it sell faster with people thinking it will be gone soon.

So, I love Seijun Suzuki and Jo Shishido. Trailer looks awesome, so I'm gonna get it...but, am I crazy, or does that trailer reuse footage from A Colt is My Passport? I've only seen that movie once, but the shot of Shishido looking down the sniper rifle scope at the beginning and definitely the gunfight in the wide dust field at the end jumped out at me.

Just watched this really solid Japanese crime film. Very similar to Suzuki's films but without the surrealism which is a bummer for me because I always lean towards to surrealism in films. However it's very well paced, fun and if you like Japanese crime films it's a must like I do.

I will try to pick it up before it goes OOP...I reckon it will be a steady seller like Stray Cat Rock (which took almost a year, and was actually 1000 less copies than this). Same goes for Retaliation.

If they didn't say it was a limited edition, they wouldn't sell as quickly.

And the reason they need to have certain titles selling quickly is because of the widespread practice of waiting for prices to fall - which is obviously entirely rational behaviour on the part of the consumer, but doesn't exactly help the label.

Which is why labels like Arrow and the BFI, who have a history of releasing high-quality in-house restorations (in other words, higher production budgets, and a greater need to recoup them quickly), are increasingly going down the limited-edition route, because it's the most rational way of ensuring a reasonable chance of breaking even - and therefore greenlighting similarly risky projects in the future.

Limited Editions are either because of expiring rights or because of the business model. People procrastinate on purchases all the time, if something is limited and selling out soon they are more likely to be punctual about a purchase. Limited editions can sell more copies of a title than it would have ever otherwise sold.

It's a piss off to me too but I do understand it, as unfortunate as it is.

There's also another addition to limited editions : they will sell out before prices drop or before ending up in multibuy sales or whatever.

You have stuff like Red Scorpion that are still, years after their releases, in stock and sold at extremely low prices within multibuy sales (£5). And on the other end, stuff like Hellgate has sold out 1000 copies full price (or close to it) in 1 month.

What is clear is that people seems not to be willing to gamble and wait for a price drop or a good reason to buy it with something else. They just buy it, and thus, 1000 or 3000 copies can be sold just like that.

It's like all the steelbooks business : it's making real good business, so no wonder some labels / studios are jumping in the wagon. If people weren't buying them, they wouldn't sell.

No worries, it's not 'sold out', they often just do that if it's out of stock and it regularly happens with new releases. It'll get dispatched eventually...usually within a week of release, but sometimes longer.
