If a thread doesn't have any use, it'll fall back and get bumped whenever somebody wants to add anything. Just let it happen? I started this thread because I'm looking forward to getting the next PT Anderson film on blu-ray - a little 'unorthodox' I suppose, considering I haven't even seen the film yet, but that's often the case for me and a lot of other people too. I haven't started a thread for A Most Violent Year which is already out in cinemas but no listing for a blu-ray yet - Inherent Vice, and any other film Anderson releases, is an exception. I hope you can understand that. Funnily enough, Inherent Vice doesn't seem to be a film for those who get hung up on the little things...chill out a bit buddy. It's a forum, not really a place for anyone to dictate what should go where. Quote:
Also it shouldn't be any later than a June release - it's rare for a studio to do a home video release longer than 3-4 months after the initial cinema release. Sometimes they wait it out if they want an extended cinema run (usually on huge 'event' films or popular awards films...for example Boyhood or Interstellar). But I doubt Inherent Vice will be as popular as those, so we'll probably see it in May/June time. Last edited by rapta; 01-29-2015 at 04:25 PM. |

Your thread is about a movie coming out in the cinema tomorrow. Isn't there a movie forum dedicated to that? |

I caught the film on Friday night on 35mm at my local indie cinema. It's a masterpiece, absolutely wonderful. It plays a little like Robert Altman's 3 Women, in that we're never quite on top of things and never quite sure of what's going on, which is reflective of the character's own path as he just wanders his way thru a peculiar situation.

I just had to google who she played, so she's far from the lead. A lot of people pop up for 1 or 2 scenes, I'd recommend seeing the film theatrically/renting it if you're thinking of buying it for any actor other than Phoenix or Brolin.

Saw the film today, really enjoyed it. As I'm still not sure how I feel about The Master I was unsure how I'd feel about this as it's gotten some mixed reviews from places you would assume to be sold on it (as well as some great reviews) but no ambiguity - it's a great film. No idea why people are getting hung up on the plot - sure, it's dense and a little confusing in terms of how why and how many other names are going to get thrown into the mix with little time to remember it but it's beside the point. The film is all about tone, feel, place and character. Phoenix is fantastic, as are Brolin, Short and del Toro (who I wish wed have seen more of). There are a few bits in the trailer that didn't make it so I hope we get some deleted scenes, just to get to spend more time with the characters. What I'd really love is a documentary along the lines of the one we got with Magnolia - one of the best available on disc for me. |

Really wanted to see this in 35mm and was hoping we'd get to at my regular 'cause apparently Picturehouse have got hold of a print or two! But still, looked great in digital...of course not the same but hey.
Loved the film. Not my favourite Anderson yet but definitely could be one to get used to (like The Master). I enjoyed it as much as Boogie Nights, maybe more so because the cast here was brilliant and I laughed a lot throughout. Plus I just love seeing Phoenix as a leading man these days, he really can carry a film better than almost anyone else. A great ride, and day one for me. Best film of the year so far. One to watch again and again - like all of Anderson's films. |

PTA ranked. Incredibly, they're all five star films for me, and The Master and There Will Be Blood rank as 2 of my 3 favourite films of the 21st century (alongside Adieu au langage).

I went to see Inherent Vice on Saturday night and it didn't disappoint. Sadly half of the audience (which wasn't more than 20 people to begin with) walked out before the end - some only 20 minutes in! Sure, the plot was difficult to comprehend but that was surely the point - Doc spends most of the film drugged up and soon finds himself overwhelmed by the twists and turns that he himself is unable to process due to his befuddlement.
Pretty much everything I've read on this film says that its best enjoyed when you allow it to just wash over you and I'd fully agree with that. It's like taking a drug that's a heady concoction of Hitchcock's Vertigo and Altman's The Long Goodbye with a dash of Antonioni, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Big Lebowski to taste. It's a neon noir that takes you down the rabbit hole of post-60s America, just after the Manson killings and the Altamont Free Concert and just before Watergate. I saw Doc as a character that was an example of the hippie naiveté, caught up in the spider-web of paranoid conspiracies that would come to define the 70s. My PTA ranking (still have yet to see Hard Eight, I've had it recorded off of Film4 for weeks now): 1. There Will Be Blood 2. Inherent Vice 3. The Master 4. Magnolia (which seems to be OOP now?) 5. Boogie Nights 6. Punch Drunk Love It will be hard for PTA to ever top There Will Be Blood for me - it's second only to Edward Yang's Yi Yi in my favourite films of the 00s. |
