Hilarious! O'Toole playing a German general with a British accent.

None of the actors do accents in this film, as I remember, they speak normally. I prefer that, like in VALKYRIE or the Kenneth Branagh "Wallander" series.

It's not like the characters would have been speaking English with German accents. To me accents only make sense in a case like Meryl Streep in SOPHIE'S CHOICE, where the character is actually supposed to be speaking accented English, not films like this where every single character is understood to be speaking German, but they're actually speaking English.

Looking forward to seeing this on BD. A favorite of mine from many viewings on TCM over the years.

Yeah, I know. I get it. O'Toole hardly looks or sounds the part of a German general, no matter what his credentials. I guess you need a lot of "suspension of disbelief" to appreciate this effort.

But he does look every inch Hitler's wet dream of the perfect Aryan specimen.

I'm almost sure the VHS of this film had the original EXIT MUSIC on it, but that was not carried over to the DVD if I remember right. Can anyone confirm this?

No one could play tightly wound like O'Toole. His metamorphosis in The Ruling Class after he is 'cured' is another example.

You obviously haven't seen this film. How about giving it a try instead of coming into this thread, ignorantly poking fun, and assuming what it's like ?

And it really does: it's far and away the best I've ever seen the film look, it respects Henri Decae's color scheme and there's plenty of detail. It also has beautiful transfers of both the teaser trailer and full trailer in 2.35:1 as well as the exit music. It's an excellent release.

I like the sound of this one. I've not had the chance to see this one before.

Night of the Generals is a good movie despite the review it just got here. However what I like about it is that it shows that even in the middle of a war on the "enemy" side some things don't change. There are still ordinary crimes being committed, murders, robberies etc. that have nothing to do with the war itself. There is still a need for policemen to solve those crimes, minor and petty as they may seem to be even when millions are also dying around the world. In a strange way I find that kind of ordinary activity somehow reassuring and comforting.

@quickdraw: Did Paul Scofield sound like a German general or Burt Lancaster a Frenchman in The Train? Good actors can make you forget who they really are. Bad ones draw attention to the same thing. Go watch the movie and then see if your feelings have changed.

(Also have just placed my order. Where would we be without Twilight Time and the other small producers).

Placed my order Wednesday 18th. How long does it typically take to get a shipping confirmation from Twilight Time?

I just got my shipping confirmation today (about 48hrs in this case).

For two previous TT movies I got my shipping confirmation within 24hrs, so they are typically fast for me.

Never heard of this before, but looks interesting and I like the cast. It's not one of those limited releases is it?

It's a Twilight Time title so, yes, it's limited to 3000 copies.

Oh, shame, I really can't afford anything else for a while. Blown my budget this month already!
