The novel got adapted again with Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas as Original Sin, but despite keeping the 19th century setting of the book (unlike the Truffaut film) it was even worse. I really wished someone would do that book justice one day, because its a great story.

For some reason I really like this movie even though I don't think it's really that good. It has a unique, off-kilter vibe. I was trying to think of how to describe it, and the first thing I thought of is that it seems as if the movie is made up of everything that was left over after the real (that is, non-existent) movie was put together. That is, all the outtakes and cut scenes. As if somewhere there is a smooth, conventional, coherent version of the movie, but the one we have isn't it.

I will be picking this up anyway, the MGM non-anamorphic disc is a chore to watch. Thankfully I saw this at a repertory theater years ago.

Not sure if it has been mentioned anywhere, but TT confirmed this is the uncut 123 minute version and NOT the chopped up U.S. version. Also, the PQ is said to be quite beautiful.

More Truffaut is most definitely welcome and Mississippi Mermaid is an over-looked Gem of a film IMHO.

I don't think I'll buy at Twilight Time prices... I saw this theatrically a couple weeks ago at IFC Center for the 1st time and wasn't that impressed. It was ok and fun mostly to see Belmondo & Deneuve play off each other but meh...

I would be interested in seeing a better transfer though. The 35mm print I saw was not in the best shape

I've always wanted to see this, but not blind buying it at TT prices. I would think, or at least hope, someone overseas might have a more attractive package for the same or less money. I can wait.

Blind buy-couldn't go wrong at $10. Enjoyed it, will stay in my collection and will watch again, thanks to Catherine Deneuve's beauty. But....

German Explosive Media released this last year and according to Caps-a-holic.com, it has German, French, Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese, I guess?) and English removable subtitles.

It's clear that the German release is based on the same old master the Twilight Time release used, with perhaps marginally better encoding, but I might still double-dip it because this is my no.1 favorite Truffaut (very minor opinion, I know) and those burned-in yellow subtitles have bugged the hell out of me.
