The article explicitly said Sony would finance and retain control over Spidey's franchise; that's not giving Marvel the upper hand.

Isn't the whole point of the MCU, to keep things self-contained? If Marvel no longer has final control over what happens with all the characters in that series, Sony could (and most likely will) send the whole thing to hell. How do you have Spidey as part of the MCU, and keep the overall integrity of that system strong if the film bombs? I'm afraid that even the combined popularity of Iron Man and Captain America couldn't keep that ship from sinking.
I'm guessing this will be like the Iron Man/Hulk distribution by Paramount/Universal back in 2008. That turned out okay for the most part.

I'd definitely be up for a Lord/Miller/Lerman Spidey movie

You think Marvel would drop the ball on this? Really think about it...There's no way they went into this unless they knew, FOR CERTAIN, they had control. This is The Incredible Hulk situation. Marvel still called the shots.

This! Exactly this!

Think about it this way: The only reason Marvel is letting Sony have "control" (an operative word...) is to get more of him out there. With Sony helping buck the money, they can afford to get more Spider-Man films in theaters amongst the rest of the MCU titles. This is a smart business move. But Feige is still very much involved and will be to the bitter end. Things will go the way he and Marvel need it to, and Sony plays ball to help.

Also, look who made the announcement: Not Sony, Marvel. This is Marvel's game. Sony is along for the ride now.

Then why does the article say otherwise? Its simple: final creative control can't belong to both parties - one has to lose while the other wins. Let's not forget, it was Feige who allowed Shane Black to butcher the Mandarin in "Iron Man 3", then hastily put together "All Hail the King" when fans complained. Nothing else has been done about that since; its a loose thread that still needs fixing.

As much as I want Spidey in the MCU, I want even more for the MCU to survive...and I highly doubt that will happen if one more Spidey film flops.

The only way I am interested in seeing Spidey again is if he joins the Avengers, another reboot is simply ridiculous.

Who made the announcement tonight? Marvel. Feige is directly involved, per the article. Again, this whole thing is to have Sony help Marvel get more films out at a time, strictly Spider-Man, than anything else. But Sony came back to the table after they walked away. Which means they had to come to Marvel's terms on the deal. That was that Feige still calls the shots. Marvel is fickle about that stuff. We'll learn more as it goes along, but you don't have to worry about Marvel not having say on what happens, they would not have made the deal otherwise. Period. End of discussion. They would not compromise the overall MCU if they couldn't get Sony to cooperate.

He's part of the MCU, that's the point. He can be in The Avengers and everything else.

Then the article should've said Marvel will retain control, not Sony.

No Spider-Man, new actor, new universe. So it's a "reboot". But only in the sense it's all new. We aren't getting an origin again. Or at least the plan is not to.

They should've just bought the rights back, and left Sony to the doom they brought upon themselves.

I have no worries they'll re-tell origins. They got it right with the opening credits of The Incredible Hulk.
