Maybe he hadn't signed a contract for the next movie last time and now he has (and doesn't care if he upsets them a little now).

Microsoft got that reputation. They like to force the consumers to update/upgrade.

Blu-ray is an obvious choice for the creative staff behind films (directors/producers, etc). More bandwidth, more storage. More expense, but when you're talking about movies with multimillion (and sometimes many many multimillion) dollar budgets, the cost of a piece of plastic is relatively immaterial.

My personal bet is that this latest round from Michael Bay may be some indirect retaliation for the treatment that Paramount gave to Transformers, where no lossless track was provided - likely due to bandwidth constraints.

Bay is walking on thin ice. He doesn't have the clout of Speilberg or Lucas or Scorsese, so he's got some brass balls saying the things he said about the company that funds his bosses in paramount.

It's all kicked off over at Engadget following the posting of this story. I don't normally bite, but I had to respond to these two fools...

Tavis Veighey @ Dec 4th 2007 10:22PM : Sony is all about THEIR standard. They only make devices that take MemoryStick. They want all their equipment, and their music, and their movies on their standard, so you have to use their equipment. There would be NO format war if Sony had not jumped ship from the HD-DVD group. Felt I had to point out the myriad of other manufacturers in the BDA

theefman @ Dec 4th 2007 9:50PM : Apparently Micahel Bay is a moron. Apart from his stupid comments about Microsoft is he aware that his "superior" format cannot deliver the full experience of HIS OWN film Transformers as HD DVD can? Only fair to mention the higher average bandwidth available with BD and the additional capacity to provide lossless audio & a full suite of extras. 'Full experience' with HD-DVD? I don't think so.

I know you shouldn't feel the trolls, but what are these people on!?!

When someone makes a statement like that for the world to hear, it won't matter if he HAS TO retract it or not. What was said was said.

Same thing in court, you can make a claim and the judge can have it stricken from the records, but it can not be removed from the jurys minds.

It's obvious he wants to get his opinion out there, whether he is forced to retract it or not.

he didn't retract it. However, he did change his stand. that is what the argument is about. I mean in a sense it is retracting.

If you have a contract, you would have no choice but to retract your comments. Remember, Transformers was getting ready to come out, he probably could have been in legal trouble for "damaging" the product with his previous comments. He probably has no contract and can now speak his mind as he sees fir. Better to have high profile people pumping the product, as they will be heard. Keep it up Mr. Bay.

Fact: Michael Bay can write the Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin.

The man is a filmmaker, not the president. He is not required by law to make sure he makes perfect sense 100% of the time. I think he does prefer Blu-ray and is pissed about the format war keeping so many movie-watchers from adopting high-def.

I am happy that he voiced his opinion. I believe that he meant what he said. After he "retracted" his first statement, I wasn't surprised. I have seen several people forced to do that after dealing with pressure from the people writing their checks. I hope other directors will do this as well.

By the time Tranformers 2 is out in theatres, 18 months will have more then passed, and Paramount will no longer be HDDVD exclusive. Thats probably what the excecs told him to make him calm down and retract his statement at that point.

He's free to speak his mind now.

I believe in Micheal Bay. Even after the retraction, it was pretty obvious that he still supported Blu. I think he was saying that... hoping that more people would buy the HDDVD transformers + some pressure from execs.

Transformers would have been the biggest selling High Def movie of all time... by a longshot and probably for another year. Thats more than just $$$. Thats news, Thats something to bragg about and be proud of. And it was stolen away from him.

Now Transformers is just a mediocre High Def seller because it was cut off from 2.7 milion BD players.... and left with 700K HD-DVD players. That sucks.

---------------

About MSFT, digital HD-lite downloads is something that they are implementing and would like to see succeed. If HDDVD and bluray stalls long enough to fail... then MSFT wins

If HDDVD causes BD to fail, then that is a huge dagger on the PS3. MSFT wins.

Bay is right.

Most people have known since the very beginning the simple truth that remains to this day: MS is HD-DVD and vice versa.

The ONLY reason HD-DVD even exists today at all is because of MS. If they walked away tomorrow disinterested or as a "neutral bystander" this would all be over with.

Don't forget as a film maker he also knows how it should look and sound. He can see and hear the flaws in the transfers much better then anyone

Members now on AVS are getting Axed because they posted the M. Bay article. What a bunch of Nazi's!! I mean how Red can they get over there.. HD-DVD is having it's ass handed to them on the software side and a few people post a legit article that could help Blu-Ray and they start banning people for it. I know one of the guy's and he had no idea the first thread was started and they banned him and he has been a member since Aug. 2001 and never had a issue with them before.. I would say Microsoft has a strong foothold on that place as well, as they let Amir float around spewing his BS..

It appears that the red ants are harrasing Michael Bay in his website.

Well it should get heated over there on Bays site now... Yikes!! My friend posted what happened to him on AVS, now on Bay's site. This is total bullshit what they did to a few members who just posted a link. One guy commented on way the Mods handled it and instantly got banned as well. Guy's been a member since Aug. 2001 and no infractions, and helps people out on audio/video gear and he gets banned.. He is pissed now and not the type you want to piss off.
