I doubt very, very much that it will require online authentication. That would mean that if you don't have a live network connection to the player, you couldn't watch a movie.
It's going to be hard enough to get people to buy new players for a physical format. Blu-ray hasn't done all that well and is in decline. Almost by definition, UHD sales will be lower. Requiring online authentication would kill the format IMO and furthermore, it's completely unnecessary. What is it exactly that they're authenticating? And if it associates the disc with a particular user, I would think that would be illegal under EU rules. |

It IS speculative. It is a what if question. Hence you are saying yes to online authentication that would be required just to use the disc that you bought at all.

Let's not be hysterical now. This is just merely a poll for our opinions.
For me, it's obviously a no. I will not invest in a format with something as ludicrous as online authentication. |

The easy answer is NO. But to clarify, if we are talking about a title key (like in the4K thread and the slide) that can either be on the disk or DL from a server, if they are well marked (like a logo in the top left corner on the front cover) I will buy the UBDs that don't require a connection, I will just not buy the UBDs that do require a connection. On the other hand if there is nothing on the covers or it is not standardized and easy to find what disks need or don't need a connection I won't buy any UBD.

There is a part of me that hopes the studios do this. Then I will not feel a need to upgrade. Quite frankly I am quite complacent with 2K that I may not have even upgraded if all the stars were aligned. Add authentication into the mix and 4K is dead to me.

I don't foresee 4K media being a big seller no matter what the studios decide on this issue. I am very worried they pull the plug on the servers if the format flops, thus rendering all purchases null and void.
I have no doubt this security feature would be compromised within three months of release. It is far too easy to spoof a server, this won't stop anyone dedicated enough to bypass the feature. |

![]() I'm a format sucker and I tend to upgrade to anything and everything...including Betamax and HD DVD. Any form of online authentication would automatically disqualify me from upgrading to UHD BD. It's the one line I would never cross. If UHD BD does NOT require an internet connection, then I would be forced to do some serious soul searching and, more likely than not, I would end up upgrading. If the powers that be decide on some form of online autnetication, then the decision is already made for me and I won't have to waste another minute or another dollar worrying about it. |

My answer would be no. I can buy a Blu-ray disc and play it 30 years from now but with a format that requires online authentication there is a chance it won't play 3 years from now. A studio might decide to create their own streaming service, make an exclusive deal with a streaming service, or pull the movie for some reason in the future.

IMO, UHD Blu-ray disc authentication is just a replay of DIVX DVD. Folks seem to be under the impression that once a disc is authenticated then they are set. It could very well be that at some point the disc may need to be authenticated again and in order to do so will incur additional charges.
It would have been interesting to know how many DIVX DVD’s were converted to DIVX Silver. DIVX Gold turned out to be DOA. How many here ask themselves why the DEG (most of the studios) has not gotten CFF for UV titles up and running? It has been several years since CFF was announced and all the functionality was posted on the UV site. Seems like another DIVX Gold. At least the discussion here is pretty civil. The DVD vs. DIVX DVD on eTown in the late 90's was apparently unmoderated and would have been rated xxx if rated. |

I voted and said no. Simply because online authentication for UHD Blu-ray will fail miserably in time.
My posts outlined methods online authentication in 4K blu-ray players in which I completely disagreed with their responses in saying that I am pro-streaming. I am not pro-streaming for movies and TV shows at all. The posters who said those words to me rushed into an opinion in which I didn't advocate. I was watching a DVD of Batman The Gotham City Serials today because it is not available as a official release on DVD or video cassette in the UK or Ireland. I find that on content alone it is not worth watching that movie serial if it was on a pirated file from the net. The same goes for movies and TV shows that are on Blu-ray because I find it unbearable to see them on a streamed video on Youtube or on other streaming services if my internet connection was high speed. All forms of Blu-ray discs should remain online neutral to make the format stable for other generations to fully enjoy it. |
