So I guess the Blu is 3D after all?!! Anyone in LA going to the screening of the movie at the Egyptian this afternoon? Exciting to see several of these old 80's 3d films on the big screen!

Attended the Friday the 13th 3D screening last night at the Egyptian in Hollywood. In another thread there is an extensive critique of the screening which I am in complete agreement with. The absence of top and bottom masking drained the show of the clarity so badly needed for a 3D presentation. Having said that I was happy many patrons got the chance to see for the first time, Friday the 13 Part 3 in it's original linear polarized format.

Well if it is a 3-D blu-ray I'll certainly be picking it up. It's odd there's no explicit mention of that on the product website, nor advertisement graphic posted above, nor a 3-D Blu-ray logo anywhere.

If it is a 3-D blu-ray, it makes it even sadder that such a small outfit seems capable of doing a proper 3-D release of an obscure animated title like this, but larger labels can't do genuine releases for titles like Spacehunter or Found Footage.

When I emailed him I mentioned seeing the announcement about the standard 2d blu and DVD and my disappointment in not seeing a 3d release. I pasted what he wrote back, so as you can see he didn't mention that the 2d release was actually 3d. It's possible the 3d disc will be announced later or will come out via a different distributor or company, but I don't pretend to know the logistics of movie companies and I don't want to mislead anyone as I'm just guessing here.

Well, it's promising to hear that the 3D version is possibly coming soon, let's hope that it does actually come and when it does it's not anaglyph or anything like that...

Agreed. Hopefully we'll hear news soon for 2019 of a StarChaser blu ray 3D release throughout the world and in the US. The animation is excellent, and the Star Wars like story is entertaining. The 3D, impressive most times, with medium, high medium to strong 3D and pop outs.

Just got back from the Egyptian theater screening. This print is the best I've seen so far. Better color and looked brighter than Friday the 13th and Frankenstein's Bloody Terror.

For those who haven't seen it, it's basically Boo Moon on steroids. It combines traditional cell animation along with computer animation, which I'm guessing was used on the ships, which have a very nice full-bodied 3-D appearance.

The story shamelessly borrows from Star Wars, but it's done in a way that's endearing rather than distracting. I'm cautiously optimistic about a 3-D Blu-Ray release.

Having recently worked running shows at the Egyptian, I know that installing movable top and bottom masking was not a viable option. it would have been in addition to the silverized screen they had to install for these 35MM over/under shows. I spoke with my friend Ben Tucker just yesterday and he assured me that the amount of time he spent calibrating and focusing the lamps were worth it for the light output he was getting. The Starchaser print belongs to 3D Space head Eric Kurland and he is proud of it's quality. I asked to be sent photos or tech specs of the 3D converging lens they are using for these shows. I am just sorry that neither I or Bob Furmanek can make it for any of these shows. The whole program was finalized and announced just a week ago or so. Great news about the 3D blu of Starchaser- day one purchase to be sure!

Wish I could have done that screening, but I couldn't do both the starchaser and Meg/Jaws3d screenings. Hopefully the blu will be 3d because it sounds like it would be enjoyable. Hopefully Jaws 3d on the big screen will be fun!

I have a 3D field sequential tape, which looks to have been made from a film print judging from the noise on the sound track and the changeover cues. The 3D in it is very good, but of course it won't work on my current TV. Hoping the news about a 3D Blu-Ray is true, I was also mad seeing that 2D announcement.

I've had a 35mm print of this title in my collection for years. Haven't run it in quite awhile but this thread has encouraged me to pull it out of mothballs and give it a screening.

Great to hear this could possibly be on blu ray 3D soon. The 2D blu ray and DVD announcement clearly exclude any mention of blu ray 3D and then mention a 3D lenticular slipcover, which seems to say there wouldn't be any 3D release, since naturally a 3D lenticular cover would work best with a blu ray 3D release.

That said, thanks to all for looking further into this.
To hear they're working on a blu ray 3D release, awesome. Thanks for the details Pixote.

I was definitely entertained by this movie, but the 3D takes it to another level, and the clarity of blu ray HD with the strong stereo 3D throughout most of the film, should be very cool to watch when it releases. Hopefully some news before the end of 2018 on a Starchaser blu ray 3D release.

Brief clip of stereo 3D side by side example.

If anyone is interested here is a pic of the actual over/under 35mm film at the end of reel #4.

There's always a chance that if the 3D elements are kept stored and safely intact, they could resurface years into the future with new home video 3D technology. For older vintage films from the 50's though, those elements are more of a challenge to keep alive I bet, based on 3-D Film Archive's details of preserving classic, vintage 3D films.

But it says on the cover -- oh, wait. It just says a lenticular cover. Darn.

I shouldn't have posted it.

Cool

Older thread link:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=261447

The good news is, the distributor/rights owner mentioned there would be a blu ray 3D release in the near future, but gave no further details. Mentioned in the original thread for StarChaser 3D.
